I just got an email from Amex Canada with an offer for a 5000 membership rewards points bonus if i complete a stay spending $500 or more at participating starwood hotels before Jan 31, 2018.
An interesting small print item [emphasis mine]:
The email states that I should call amex travel to find out which hotels are participating but that if i reserve through them, i won't get the most important benefit; a potential upgrade. i know upgrades for golds are not incredible but i usually get a higher floor, better view, etc. just not a huge suite but that's fine with me. i'm wondering if i call to find out if a hotel i was thinking of staying at in january is participating. and then, book through starwood's own site.
anyone else get this offer?

Only select SPG-participating properties are eligible for this offer. Platinum Card Travel Service has a complete list of participating properties. I called Amex, and there are 1383 participating properties and 66 excluded properties. Agent emailed me the list, but I'm not really sure how to post that with the scrolling thread. If someone wants to send me some tips, I'd greatly appreciate it. Or maybe it's safe to say that almost all properties are included!

I also received this offer. What I'm not clear on is whether or not you're required to book through Amex Travel to get the bonus points, or merely use the card to pay for the stay when booked at SPG. Spending $500 to get $50 worth of Amex MR points is an attractive 10% yield, but forgoing stay credit and elite benefits, esp. for an SPG Platinum member, diminishes the appeal for me.

my interpretation of the offer is that you only have to pay with your amex card. i have not seen anything that states that you must book through amex travel. they're simply saying that you should call amex to find out which hotels are participating and hoping that you book through them as well. but like you say, foregoing the spg benefits and credits would be a bad deal.

OT, but the offer made me peruse the Amex online booking site and I found a Sheraton property that was actually significantly cheaper than anywhere else, with a 24 hour cancellation policy to boot. Except for a specific hotel in BOG, I can't ever recall having seen Amex offering a cheaper rate. I may consider a BRG, as I did not have to log in to my account to get that rate. But then again, using an Amex card must be a prerequisite that may negate the claim.

Spending $500 to get $50 worth of Amex MR points is an attractive 10% yield, but forgoing stay credit and elite benefits, esp. for an SPG Platinum member, diminishes the appeal for me.
I'm torn whether to take advantage of this offer or not. All my stays will be outside Canada, so the 10% savings is reduced to 7.5% after I pay the forex fee, and that's not cash, it's MR points which I don't really care for. My option is to pay with my US SPG Amex which has no forex fees and gives me 2 SPG pts/$ spent. I realize the 7.5% discount is slightly better, but I'm loathe to pay forex fees and I find SPG points so much more valuable than MR points.
BTW, I also have an offer with my US Amex Plat which will give $60 statement credit for charging $300 at US SPG properties. That's 20% back, in CASH!

I think we're on the same page on this one. In a previous life, I amassed hundreds of thousands MR points when they were much more valuable and there wasn't as much competition. These days I use my Canadian Chase cards (likely soon to be extinct) for foreign stays/purchases and my SPG Amex for Canadian stays/purchases. I'd love to be able to get a bonafide US credit card w/o having to reside there. The only usefulness I currently have for Amex MR points is for a minor top up of my Aeroplan account so that I can book an upcoming mini RTW in F.

actually, there is a link. it's an "enroll now" button on the email. it has a long alpha-numeric string in the URL. i tried using it with one changed character and it didn't work. as much as i would like to share, that would indicate to me that it is targeted and it won't work for anyone else.
