Amex Platinum UK travel insurance after age 70?
I assume my Platinum travel insurance will stop in August when I am 70. I enjoy the card and, as a regular traveller, appreciate its benefits.
Does anyone know if Amex have a way round this - surcharge?
As I pay my subscription in January, can I use the card till August and get a refund on my subscription for the balance.

In my experience, there is a pro-rata refund for all cancelled Amex cards. So I'd expect to get about £150 back if cancelled around August (it'll be a quite precise refund - worked out down to the day).
If I were you though, I'd say that it wouldn't hurt to call Amex and see if they can extend the cover!

I asked and the answer was a firm No.
Investigating alternatives, I found that my Nationwide FlexPlus current account offers cover to age 75 with a surcharge available for 75+. Also includes car breakdown in the UK and the rest of Europe. Far fewer exclusions, too.

I did call Amex and they referred me to their insurance team, who offered to cover me for around £250 pa. No extensions offered even with a surcharge - but I guess I expected that.
What I did not expect is their inflexible 'tough luck, you just have to accept it' attitude. I suppose loyalty counts for very little these days. I have been an Amex cardholder for most of my life and a platinum one for 20 years.

Lloyds Private Banking comes with 'free' travel insurance to age 80, which would kick this can ten years down the road and add 'free' AA cover, mobile phone insurance and magazine subscription or cinema tickets (honestly). Bank of Scotland Private Banking (Lloyds by another name) similar, I believe.
