250 miles short of a roundtrip. Free flights but some taxes and surcharges.

MR to BA 25000 MR=33750 avios

BOS-DUB-LHR-DUB-BOS 12500+4500+4500+12500=34000 Avios

You could buy the remaining 250 Avios for a small fee

You could also do this by using the BA "$ & miles" option... or just buy one of the segments.

Did you mean BOS-DUB-LHR-DUB-BOS? Out of curiosity, why DUB as a stop and not directly to LHR?

Is there any way to search for tricks like this in general, or is it all on a case by case basis?

JFK-DUB is 20,000 Avios one way in Coach on EI. DUB-LHR is 4,500 Avios one way in Coach with minimal fees on BA if booked as a "Reward Flight Saver" award.

As noted, your Avios will go much further if you can depart from BOS. If you can plan far enough in advance, you should be able to lock in a cheap (< $10 each way) Manhattan <=> Boston bus ticket on Bolt Bus or Megabus.

Be aware though.. Getting there is one thing but, assuming you want to come back, a one-way ticket back from London to NYC will cost pretty much the same as if you just booked a RT in the first place.
