hotel

I plan on staying with mandarin oriental on hk and this was their cancellation policy

L450 Superior One King Bed - CXL BY 1400 LOCAL HOTEL TIME ON26AUG10 CXL FEE - 1 NIGHT CXL BY 1400HR 2 DAYS PRIOR TO ARR TO AVOID ONE NIGHT PENALTY

Does that mean if i cancel after august 26, the penalty i lose is just 1 night? I plan to book 4 nights but i might cancel if my gf has a baby that is why i asked. thanks

I read the penalty as any cancellation after 1400 local time on 26 AUG is a one night penalty. This would include no-showing for the reservation.

This is old but on-topic. I didn't want to start a new thread.

If (for example) the 3rd night is free, does a 6 night stay mean 2 free nights?

Wouldn't assume so. I've always booked 2 reservations and informed front desk at check-in so we can maintain the same room. Plus you'll receive an extra hotel amenity (e.g. $100 F&B credit) for your second reservation.

Be sure to zero out your hotel folio after the 3rd night.

It will ultimately depend on the particular promotion, there are certainly some cases where you get an extra night per 2/3 nights you book so book 6 and you pay for 4.

Does this work/ is it allowable?

Since getting my Platinum card I have only been making fairly short breaks and so its never been a significant issue for me but I have always wondered if you have a longer stay if you can break it up into chunks to get multiple FHR benefits with the possible pain of having to switch rooms or such.

If it is possible, how far can it be pushed. If you were staying 10 nights can you really do it as 10 separate bookings to get 10x the added benefit?

The terms state:

back-to-back stays within a 24-hour period at the same property considered one stay.

I have noticed that the nightly rate is increased to cover the "free night" and equals almost exactly the regular rate with no free night.

It's going to vary by property, but when I shopped the Park Hyatt Aviara and the US Grant, the FHR room rate was the same as the hotel website's room rate for the same room on a refundable basis.

Back to back stays of multiple nights works but wouldn't push luck trying for 10X. When I had personal and business Platinum cards...and when traveling with my additional cardholder --- we switched, but it was never more than a weekend.

Most FHR hotels also participate in Virtuoso's program offering the same amenities. If in doubt, book between the two (tacky).

As a side note, I've only seen higher rates in conjunction with a free night when a particular room category is unavailable. Otherwise it's the same (low) rate as the hotel's website.

Mechanics ...

  1. Is the property supposed to not bill you for the (in this case) 4th night, or does Amex retroactively credit back?
  2. What about resort fees on the 4th night?

You will not see the charge for the free night on the bill.

Resort fees, if any, will still need to be paid.

I've also had an Amex travel agent tell me that taxes need to be paid on a free night, but the last time I had a free night, there were no taxes on the bill.
