Split $ & miles upgrade

Wife and I are flying Thursday and a short leg has miles/$ upgrade of 10k/$97. I'd like to use miles for wife and $ for me. Called in and agent said she needed to split the reservation. Is this true or HUCA? Anybody know if this can be done without splitting the reservation?

I have never done this, but similar type transactions require splitting the PNR so that would make sense. Everyone values miles differently, but Id pay the $97 versus splitting the PNR.

If true, I suspect this is due to the system limitation of not being able to have two people on one PNR in different cabins. This likely requires two separate transactions, during which time, however brief, the passengers would be in different cabins.

Agreed - the value depends on the person & situation. In my case, I've got boatloads of miles so I just upgraded both for 20k miles. The reason I would have liked to pay for mine is getting some LPs (admittedly not that much but I like accumulating them early to avoid having to scramble next February and every little bit adds up).

There's a lot of people out there that would buy 10,000 miles for $97 in a heartbeat.

Also, if you split the PNR and buy one upgrade (or use miles), the price for the second one could go up in the few minutes it will take you to buy the second one.
