Multiple Pax and Fare Classes

My wife and I are about to book a trip on AA with some OW codeshares.

Currently one of the legs shows I1. So when I search for 2 tickets it pushes us both to R.

Can they manually book our two tickets on the same PNR but one of us in I and one of us in R for this specific flight leg?

She is OW Sapphire and I am none so we want to be on the same PNR.

To my knowledge there's no way to combine two PNRs. However, I have found that AA is very good about linking reservations and extending benefits. I am an AS elite/One World Emerald and I reached out via Twitter after my bf and I purchased tickets on separate PNRs. The folks there replied quickly, linked our reservations and moved him next to me in MCE as a courtesy. The only downside is that linking reservations didn't place him on the upgrade list to F.

No there is no way to do it I believe. I'd weigh if it really is worth it to be linked together based on what benefits of her status you are planning on using. If the fare difference is substantial I would book one ticket and then wait a day or two and see if another seat in I opens up before booking the second one.

Booking separate reservations shouldn't cause too much of a headache, MCE seating can be easily obtained by calling AA as stated above.

If you will have a lot of luggage, only she will get the two free bags as OWS instead of two bags each if you book separately.

If she has a non-US based OWS status you should have business lounge access, and that does not require you to be on the same reservation.

By calling AA can an AAgent issue under one PNR, two passengers under two different fares? I am wondering...

Thanks all. Actually I will be AS MVP Gold by the time of travel like my wife so maybe its not a big deal to be separate.

And, if you couldnt tell from the fare classes, we are buying biz class directly so we get free bags and lounge access from that anyway. I guess just in terms of if things get messed up it might be better to be on one PNR. The fare difference is about $600.

IMO for a savings of $600 it's a no-brainer to have 2 separate PNRs.
As others have noted, just call and have AA "link" them.

As I understand it, you are considering purchasing one ticket in I and one in R. For even greater savings, you could potentially try the technique that's been under discussion in this thread (see post #19), although it is apparently not guaranteed to work for all (see post #26 and following). The idea is that you try to simultaneously book the last available I fare in two browsers at once, and you might find that both are honored. You still have the two separate PNR issue, but it sounds like maybe that is not a big deal in your situation. Good luck.

Can't be done in single PNR (two passengers on different booking codes same flight). This requires two PNRs.

No because everyone in the booking needs to have exactly the same arrangements and that includes being in the same fare bucket not just the same cabin.
