You need to call in the AA desk to apply it.

Of course.

If upgrade space isn't available then they'll just put you on the waitlist. If you provide your flight and date then many of us have access to ExpertFlyer which is a paid service where we can check for you before you call.

EF shows no upgrade space currently available tpa-phx-hnl 12/22. It would be waitlist.

What does 1/212 mean?

If you have the option, you might reroute on the 707am flight TPA-DFW, connecting to 1125am DFW-HNLTPA-DFW-HNL. Do the same on the return. The DFW-HNL-HNL segment will be a widebody (787-9) with more F seats and a generally more pleasant experience for a longer flight - even in main cabin extra or premium economy. For waitlisting, just call and request to apply a points+copay upgrade.

Are upgrades given based on date you enter the waitlist, or your status with AA?

Status (CK then EP then PP etc.), followed by LPs. Time added to waitlist might be a tie breaker somewhere, but it's definitely not a major factor in the waitlist order.
