American could not check baggage to final destination w/17 hour layover

Has this happened to anyone? I bought a ticket from LAX to BKK with layover in HND. When I went to check my bags at LAX, the agent could only check my bags to HND. I was then told that I had to pickup bags at HND and then check bags with JL to BKK.

Did the agent say why? How long is your layover?

From whom did you buy the ticket? Are you certain that both flights are on a single ticket?

Arrived HND at 5:05am scheduled to depart 17 hours later at 12:05 am. Ticket bought on American website. Apparently arriving on the 23rd and departing on the 24th was causing error

I would speak to JL upon arrival at HND. If you do not wish to enter Japan (or are inadmissible), JL staff should be able to intercept and retag the bags for you.

American agent said that is not possible. Agent wanted me to take earlier flight to BKK from HND but wanted me to pay an addition $3200. I said no way.

AA will only check through on layovers under 12 hours. I guess that includes partner connections too.

AA has a policy of not through-checking bags when there is a connection of more than a certain number of hours. (It was 12 hours, but a blogger has suggested that it was recently increased to 16.5 hours. Not sure if that is confirmed.)

If it truly is now 16.5 hours then I feel as if the universe is truly picking on OP with their 17 hour layover.

I think that the OP's math might be off: If he is arriving HND at 5:05 am and departing at 12:05 am, then that is a 19-hour layover.

I’ve made far more embarrassing math errors in far more important contexts so I’m not going to bag on OP. Although if it turns out AA actually has extended the layover limit to 18.5 hours I will return and double down on my prediction that OP is hated by G-d.

The vague part is the "connection on American". The OP has a connection on American by ticket sold, but not operationally.

Interesting. Pre-COVID of course, I had a US LHR and I think it was to Malta flight. Overnight layover in London. Airline refused to short check bag to LHR - said it was against OW rules. Of course my bag from LHR to Malta traveled two days behind me!

Don't know if the check-in agent bent the rules a little for me on a recent trip from San Francisco to Hong Kong via Tokyo Haneda. I was on United. The first flight arrived 14:50 and the next flight departed 08:50 the next morning - that's 18 hours. My bags were through-checked to Hong Kong. I was happy - I had two large suitcases!

I hate the verbiage " MAY"...You MAY have to pay. Well, will I or won't I?
When one purchases a ticket the rules need to be clear. Instead we end up on the phone.
