So on my upcoming itinerary, I am 1/4 on upgrades clearing. Oddly I have one flight to MIA where F class has 8 empty seats and they still have not processed upgrades for that flight.

Kinda in the weeds with this question...

When does a status upgrade need to kick in for the upgrade list, specifically? For instance, if I am on a flight at noon on a Friday and I am platinum, but my elite status upgrades to plat pro, would that status have to be upgraded before the various elite status windows open (~120 hours = prior Sunday)? before the new upgrade status window would kick in (72 hours = Tuesday)? at booking? something else?

I ask because my status will likely upgrade at some point during the windows between the statuses ahead of my next flight. Just curious how they sort out the ranking system and when it's locked in. Thanks.

i went from PP to EP after the EP window had started. Got upgraded soon after my status changed (= 12 hours before PP upgrade window opened), so it seems it’s automatic without adding/readding FFN

Correction.

my phone just beeped a new 1A BP.

:tu:

this is my first flight in 3 months (surgery). It’s really weird not seeing people wearing masks.

Upgraded @ T100 on AA 2900 to PHX on a Friday afternoon (6;13 P) flight, but first full since a month ago on the way back on 6/17 (Thursday morning).

JFK/SFO on 6/4 booked for family of 4 and SWU certs to J for all 4 after booking. All 4 cleared into F 2 hours before take off. I'm EP, other 3 have no status.

This is the second time this has happened to me. MCO-PHL departing today, J7 until 24 hours before check in. I thought it was weird that with so many open seats in J and nearly empty Y, I was not sure why I was not clearing any upgrades. Then right at check in, flight goes from J7 to J0. Then I see I am #1 on the waitlist with only one other person. This means there were 8-9 CK people in front of me on an nearly empty flight or there was something wrong with my ticket that did not get picked up in this upgrade sweeps. Of course no one at AA will admit than anything going on and I cannot prove that multiple people with lower status upgraded ahead of me until I board and poll people in J (which I won't do of course)

Was AA offering a cheap buy up to F that maybe a lot of folks took advantage of at check in?

Y was so empty seems unlikely. There was an offer of 161$ upgrade to J in the days before but only 1-3 takers from what I could see from watching seat maps and EF capacity

But an empty Y has no bearing on AA's upgrade offers. Also many people don't check their reservations until it's time to check in, so for a lot of folks their first time seeing any upgrade offer would be around T-24.

What happened to to you on this flight? This is exactly what happened to me and then all of the seats cleared at T24 but I was left behind. Now I am 1 of 2 people on the waitlist 12 hours before departure.

2 empty seats back sea-dfw today unfortunately I'm 4/19 so I will enjoy 8A.

I got upgraded at about T-40 hours. Its kind of like they finally "got around to it". Of course, AA then cancelled basically all MIA-IAH-MIA flights yesterday which created a massive mess. Finally was rerouted IAH-DFW-FLL but there were massive wait lists with stranded passengers all over the place. Family of four trying to get down to their grandfather's funeral in CTG - no seats available at all to MIA and almost none available to FLL (I got lucky).

I'm seeing that pattern where more F seats than I would expect are kept open closer to departure day and I get pinged to pay for an upgrade. It's basically a game of chicken. So far I have always held out for the complimentary upgrade and won.

In a way the whole thing works for me as I am often booking within a couple of days of departure. I am then not faced with an F cabin mostly full of lower level elites who had already passed their upgrade windows and got moved up.
