Fuel diversions owing to Colonial Pipeline hack hitting AA

Word is coming out that the Colonial Pipeline hack is affecting ops at certain airports including CLT. Fuel supplies are running low for Jet-A (among other fuels) and certain flights are being dispatched with light fuel loads with an expectation of a fuel tech stop.

Today's AA569 CLT-HNL is apparently already set for a fuel stop in DFW.

Also read the CLT-LHR will stop in BOS. Amazing that there wasn't cyber security on such a critical piece of infrastructure.

You'd be amazed at how many businesses view cybersecurity as a negotiable expense and choose to cheap out on it. Those companies are in for a hard lesson in the coming months and years as this continues to be a bigger issue.

I have not heard of any updates today of when the pipeline should be restored.

With the pipeline coming from TX to the east coast, you'd think further up the east coast would have more issues (meaning more fuel available in CLT vs. BOS)

AA569 says "on time" on AA.com

However it's a different story on flghtaware.com

They've got 569 leaving both CLT and DFW today bound for Honolulu. Is this the diversion presumably?

My son is a IT security engineer and at one point in his career was hired to test the cybersecurity of a major, but different pipeline company. He said that it was incredibly insecure and someone with minimal skills could effectively destroy the entire pipeline network, like cause it to blow up.

I can second this.

On many booster stations, the passcode for the controller is written in sharpie on the outside.

The east coast is serviceable via barge/tanker vs somewhere like CLT. Wonder if that's why?

New England and the Mid-Atlantic are also served by more pipelines running through the midwest (i.e. across IN/OH/PA).

Just renewed our cyber insurance policies at work. It's been a quick evolution from convincing senior management just a few years ago that we needed the coverage where the primary concern was the release of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) to a primary focus of the policy today being ransomware. PII releases almost seem quaint compared to the havoc that can be wrought these days with ensuing shutdowns of operations and potential bodily injury and property damage.

I'm skeptical of AA's response. Over 600 flights a day from CLT and they reroute two? Couldn't they tanker enough and scrap a few short hauls in multiple flight
markets and manage to fuel those two?

They’ll probably just add a fuel surcharge like BA and then just keep it as a permanent fee forever.

Absolutely not! They won't do that. Sorry! They don't like pay fuel surcharge. It's cost too much money!

Cancel flights, probably with hundreds of passengers, with the associated re-routing, refunds, etc., just to avoid two 45 minute stops to add fuel? Doesn't seem to make sense to me.

It's pretty much only the southeast that is being hit by shortages. The rest of the country has other ways to delivery fuel.
