American Airlines Uses Partnerships to Grow Its Network, Offer Customers More Choice, and Provide a Premier Travel Experience in the NortheastWednesday, April 21, 2021, 10:00

FORT WORTH, Texas — American Airlines and JetBlue are making it easy for customers to return to travel while continuing to deliver on the promise of growth and customer choice as a result of their Northeast Alliance.
  • Beginning Oct. 31, American is adding new service from New York (JFK) to New Delhi (DEL) and will offer customers the fastest growing network from the United States to India than any other airline partnership program.
  • New York and Boston will see significant growth with new nonstop service and additional codeshare routes as a result of the Northeast Alliance with JetBlue.
  • Customers will have a premier customer experience when traveling in the Northeast with the fastest secure side connecter at JFK and an industry-leading product.
  • Expansion of the airline’s network will provide better global connectivity for growing markets like Austin, Texas, and Nashville, Tennessee, for customers who are ready to travel.

“Our global partnerships are designed to grow our network to benefit our customers, team members, and investors,” said Vasu Raja, American’s Chief Revenue Officer. “Since the inception of our partnership with JetBlue, we have committed to offering customers more flights, more destinations and a better experience when traveling. We’re proud to deliver on those promises for our customers, not just in the Northeast, but throughout the entire American Airlines network, who now have greater access to the world.”

“With the Northeast Alliance, we are finally able to give our customers in New York and Boston what they’ve been asking for years — more JetBlue service and more JetBlue low fares,” said Scott Laurence, head of revenue and planning for JetBlue.

Fastest growing network to India

Beginning Oct. 31, American will launch nonstop service from New York (JFK) to New Delhi (DEL) on a Boeing 777-200 to meet the strong local demand. With its Qatar Airways partnership and previously announced Seattle (SEA) to Bengaluru, India (BLR), route, American will offer customers more ways to fly between the United States and India than any other airline partnership. Flights to New Delhi will conveniently connect customers to India’s capital territory three times per week, and then daily during the holiday peak from Nov. 17 to Jan. 3.

More service from Boston and New York

American intends to introduce new service from Boston (BOS) to Cincinnati (CVG), St. Louis (STL) and Toronto (YYZ) as part of its effort within the Northeast Alliance to provide additional options for customers in the Northeast. The airline will also operate all flights to Los Angeles (LAX) on its signature Airbus A321T aircraft beginning Nov. 2. Under the Northeast Alliance, American and JetBlue will serve 46 of the top 50 markets from Boston, making it easier to get to the places that matter the most as customers begin to embrace travel again.

The Northeast Alliance will also enable new service from New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA), as both carriers intend to introduce the following markets:

American JetBlue Houston (IAH) Jacksonville, Florida (JAX
Oklahoma City (OKC) Nashville, Tennessee (BNA)
Omaha, Nebraska (OMA) New Orleans (MSY), Portland, Maine (PWM) Sarasota, Florida (SRQ) Savannah, Georgia (SAV)

With these additions, American and JetBlue will offer more service between New York and Florida than any other carrier.

American and JetBlue launched their first codeshare flights in February, and the list continues to grow with 39 more flights available for purchase on either aa.com or JetBlue.com starting May 3. JetBlue will place its code on 24 more American flights while American will place its code on 15 JetBlue flights. Customers can look forward to more choices from the Northeast, including the best schedule pattern on flights between BOS and Washington, D.C. (DCA) and flights from the Northeast to the West Coast.

Eager travelers in the Northeast will have a bright summer, including the launch of long-haul international flights from JFK to Athens, Greece (ATH), beginning June 3 and from JFK to Tel Aviv, Israel (TLV), beginning May 6, which were previously announced in conjunction with the Northeast Alliance.

Offering the best product for customers

Thanks to newer aircraft and a seamless connection between Terminal 5 and Terminal 8 at JFK, customers from the Northeast can look forward to an easier and more convenient journey.

Premium product to Los Angeles

When traveling between Boston and Los Angeles, whether on JetBlue or American, the Northeast Alliance enables the most flights to choose from, access to a premium experience with all lie-flat seats, and entertainment on state-of-the-art aircraft. The A321T has been the standard of comfort on American’s flights between JFK and LAX as well as between JFK and San Francisco (SFO), offering first and business class. That level of comfort will now extend to all flights between LAX and BOS.

Larger aircraft with dual-class service

Just in time for summer travel, and as the Northeast Alliance enables more growth for American in New York, American plans to remove 50-seat regional aircraft from New York and Washington, D.C. As a result, every flight on American from JFK, LGA and DCA will be operated with aircraft that feature at least two classes of service.

Easy connections

Northeast Alliance customers flying in and out of JFK connecting on codeshare flights can also look forward to customer-friendly and easy transfers between JetBlue’s Terminal 5 and American’s Terminal 8 when secure-side transportation launches this summer.

More choices from more cities

American’s growing global partnerships benefit customers across the United States. Customers in rapidly growing cities and key business markets such as Austin; Nashville; Raleigh, North Carolina; Columbus, Ohio; Cleveland; Cincinnati; Memphis, Tennessee; and Indianapolis now have more ways to connect to the world through American’s flights and its partnerships with JetBlue Airways and Alaska Airlines.

Through American’s AAdvantage® program, customers in these cities can earn miles, redeem miles and receive upgrades and other global benefits only made possible through American’s loyalty program. In the coming months, more details will be revealed about enhancements to American’s AAdvantage and JetBlue’s TrueBlue frequent flyer programs that will help customers unlock these benefits with even more ease.

Not saying it will work, but the sample size of failure is small enough that I can't draw a conclusion.

ran the ord-del route for good 6-7 years so good sample size for sure.. basically never made money (in fact lost a lot) as AI used to undercut prices like crazy.. was the old 777 which had 16F (still small screen) but used to be a great deal to buy J and use SWU to get F..

Right, but it was a different airport and a different product. That it ran for 6 years losing money is just bad management; if it loses money for 2 years and you change nothing, why would it suddenly make money for years 3-7?

Had they tried from ORD, JFK, DFW etc. And they all failed, then it would be fair to say they haven't succeeded. This is just data point 2

I was curious, so I made a spreadsheet based on current service and announcements. The following North American markets are served nonstop from BOS by either DL or WS but not by AA or B6.

BGR
MCI
MEM
MYR
YYC

Wow that's a small list. YYC is obviously due to the Canadian point of sale. BGR and MYR were just added by DL too.

The international list is less exciting because AA only serves London and DL + partners only overlap AA + partners on LHR. It's AMS, CDG, FCO, ICN, and KEF.

I agree. I'm not sure why AA always seems to want to go to DEL.

That said, using QR (or EK but not if you're trying to keep it oneworld) makes bypassing LHR pretty easy, plus the product is far better.

JetBlue is adding MCI next year. YYC has never operated. Same with MEM. MYR is a new seasonal market that probably won't last. DL really doesn't have that much.

Internationally, AA technically has JV to HND.

I saw a parallel announcement about B6 restarting JFK-YVR. I'm assuming there will be an AA codeshare, so I'm hoping to earn miles on this route again (CX notwithstanding).

I know. I now have to change planes in DFW or PHX or SEA. It’s very annoying.

I'm really curious if AA will codeshare JFK-YVR. I flew that route on CX a lot. I've also done YVR-EWR with AC, but I prefer JFK. I'm assuming B6 will operate that flight out of T8?

But they can fly to Europe from JFK. In fact, with the announced new routes so far, AA will fly not only to Europe from JFK. But also South America, the Middle East, India, and to Asia with their JV/ATI partner JL. And who knows, with South African Airways looking like it won't be coming back in its same form, we might just see service to S. Africa from JFK, as well. Or perhaps from MIA. We sure as hell won't see it from PHL.

When AA last had 321T on BOS-LAX (2019) it was a huge failure, less than 100 MC seats result in overbooking and cabin roll every day (exaggerating but you get what I mean), hugely unprofitable. I am surprised that they even considered doing it again.
Personal anecdote: booked a MC ticket for <200, comp upgraded to J 100 hours out, moved to F before boarding, as a result when landed in LAX I was able to use FFD! net positive trip IMO.

Not quite that great as JayJu's score, but pretty happy with booking LAX-JFK J for 17,500K non-stop in the fall. Seems like 100% it converts to a flat bed and 50% chance I can rebook at my time of choice (although I found a late departure which suits me just fine, assuming a lie flat).

Doubtful. B6 is not re-locating to T8 as part of the partnership. AS on the other hand might see their flights move now that they are part of OW.

You think AA will codeshare JFK-YVR?
