Flight Changes
So change fees are eliminated but used to be restrictive could not change from a nonstop to a connecting flight or from connecting to nonstop. Does this still exist..

Sounds like you're conflating same day flight change/standby with actual changes which involve a fare difference there used to be $200+ change fees on non-refundable tickets and now that fee doesn't exist anymore. You can change a connecting reservation to a non-stop or vise versa, but you'll be on the hook for fare difference. For SDFC, you can only fly the same routing, unless there is IRROPS.

As the previous flyer already posted, sounds like you are talking about SDFC. On flights that have been very full to at least 75%, AA has been sending emails giving passengers the option to change for free with more generous criteria than the standard SDFC.
