Let the speculation begin on new routes...

"As a result of the new runway, American Airlines just announced direct service flights to Africa, with plans for Asia to be next."

This is kind of absurd. AA didn't announce CMN because PHL has a longer runway. A fully-loaded 757 could take off on a runway much shorter than that.

And flights to Asia would have been fine taking off from the old runway 1500 feet shorter. A longer runway doesn't create demand for new routes. 1500 feet of asphalt is not what's standing between PHL and a non-stop flight to NRT.

I'm all in favor of longer runways, but the suggestion in the article that the extension of the runway from 10,500' to 12,000' has resulted in AA's new service to "Africa" (Casablanca, Morocco) seems like BS to me. From PHL, CMN is slightly closer than CDG -- which has had AA nonstops from PHL for some time.

Edited to add: DMPHL beat me to the punch.

And for what its worth, BOS, where the longest runway is 10,083', has service on CX to HKG. (Not sure if that flight is ever weight restricted, though.)

Thank goodness. That was my only complaint about PHL.

Really nothing that brings AA closer to achieving their PHL "crown jewel" of the northeastern seaboard vision brings me joy this holiday season, including this runway extension.

As far as I'm concerned Boeing can use it as an overflow parking lot for the 7M8s.

I would like to see PHL carry out the long talked about extension of 8-26 from 5,000' to 7,000'. Giving the regional jets another runway to use for landings (and maybe even take-offs too) would, I think, make PHL a more efficient airport.

I’d like to know when the conversion from landfill to passenger terminal will be complete. Or is it the other way around? It’s hard to tell...

It's a bit disingenuous and really stretching it for a BOS Homer to criticize PHL's airport.
