Process to apply remaining ticket value

Feel pretty stupid asking this basic question, (should be basic question !), but I couldn't figure it out in time to make a last minute reservation this morning. There weren't options to apply an old ticket number when I went to purchase the new ticket (that I could find anyway), or clear instructions on AA's website detailing the process (I imagine they are buried someplace but I couldn't find them.) Seems like I knew how to do this once upon a time without calling reservations, but I may be thinking of another airline.

I did try to enter the reservation locator code into the "My Trips", and the "Find a Reservation". Basically the same but no luck there either option. Then I spent too much time on hold waiting for an agent and realized I was within the two hour window and hung up at that point. I considered racing to the airport but with the uncertainties didn't think there was enough margin on time to make the effort worth the risk something wouldn't work anyway.

Thanks. Any process guidance is much appreciated. I may still try to make the remaining afternoon flight.

Make the reservation, put it on hold, and call reservations. Or, just call reservations. Ticket exchanges using tickets on previously cancelled itineraries cannot (yet) be done online, in my experience.
