Welcome to the 2019 "NEWBIE LOUNGE"
Ask Your Consolidated / Combined AA Questions Here (flame free)
MODERATOR GUIDEPOST:
(This post can only be edited by moderators.)

Welcome to the Newbie Lounge!
Welcome to Flyertalk!

The Newbie Lounge is a place for newer and less experienced members to ask their questions about American Airlines and the AAdvantage program and have answered by our more experienced and knowledgeable members. Feel free to ask any question related to American Airlines and AAdvantage here.

NOTE: This is a "flame free" thread; flaming, personal criticism for "failing to search" etc. is not allowed (if posted, the post will be summarily deleted, the poster subject to sanctions).

Advanced questions posed by veteran FT users may be moved and / or merged into existing master or GUIDE threads, most of which have Wikiposts at the top of the page that contain summaries of important information.

We volunteer Moderators monitor this "lounge" thread to assist you as well. When browsing the fora, look at the page tops of the various forums. There will be a menu, and often "sticky" threads, and threads with header "wiki posts" (created and maintained by the FlyerTalk community) with important information relating to that forum / topic.

Don't hesitate to contact a moderator or another member if you have any additional questions. You can PM the Moderators by clicking on , which pops up a message box; the message goes to all this forum's Moderators. Note that unlike some sites with paid staff moderators, FlyerTalk Moderators are volunteers, and most work, travel, go on holiday, etc. You can Private Message us using the PM system (My Flyertalk) and our handles.

We're glad you've chosen to join the Flyertalk frequent flyer community!

Q. How can I find information more easily than reading through all the threads? Now that I'm here, what do I do next?

Check out the following resources:

Searching can be key to finding important information and answers without waiting for someone to drop by and answer, and it helps prevent that information fragmentation. FlyerTalk Advanced Search can seem quirky to the infrequent user, but it's fairly powerful if one knows how to use it. There are several ways to search:

Forum basics: Now that the new AA has become by some measures "the world's largest airline", this new, combined has become a "mega-forum", very large, very active - and theoretically very difficult to find information and easy to lose one's place. Having to search for and sort through dozens - or more - of threads on baggage, airports, minimum connect times or the like could soon become unproductive and discouraging.

To prevent this from occurring, please note we try to:

Keep a few "sticky" threads: such as GUIDE posts, OSO / IROPS, etc. for urgent and quick reference, such as basic "where do I find" reasons

Keep threads to specific topics: Prevent information fragmentation and loss by consolidating questions, answers and discussion of one topic contained in one thread. (This also honors those members who have already shared valuable information and experiences.)

"Popular" threads are likely to have a Wikipost at the head that will summarize important information and have resource links. These are "community property", and as any wiki are established, maintained and updated by the members (with 90 days of tenure and 90 posts on FlyerTalk).

You may find your question or post merged into one of those threads. Be sure that we will leave a link behind from your original thread, and to look up to see if there's a wiki with information. We apologize for any possible inconvenience or difference between this forum and others, but we think you'll like some of the resources and tools here to enable more convenient, comfortable travel on AA and greater knowledge sharing.

Keep it welcoming: We're proud the members of both FFPs have kept the brickbats to a minimum; we want this forum to be welcoming, civil and information rich, so name calling (including calling a member one disagrees with "AApologist") and snark are not tolerated. Posts with such are likely to be summarily deleted in their entirety; repeated such behavior may result in suspension of one's membership privileges or being banned from this forum. Let's keep it friendly and in accordance with the FT Rules.

FlyerTalk Rules (We all agree to abide by these, and are held accountable.)

that’s true too. The problem is going to be getting out of New Orleans. They just said tropical depression late tonight or early tomorrow.

You think there is a chance I can call and find out if this is mechanical or weather related?

Obviously, I assume it’s weather related.

you can call and ask. But you can still get a refund no matter what if flight is cancelled

Its a professional get together that I planned. So I really don’t want to cancel.

Someone suggested I try to get on a red eye tonight from MSY to at least DFW. It keeps saying something went wrong— is it too late to try this?

For that you may have to call. The system tends to only like straightforward changes.

It's probably too late to get out tonight, but I would recommend getting to the airport as early as possible tomorrow. The weather does not look promising. Tonight, I would look up all possible alternatives where there is availability in first and have those ready to go. You should also track the inbound flight for your flight to MIA; chances are if the inbound is delayed or cancelled, your flight will be affected. If it is imperative that you get out tomorrow, also consider whether you can survive economy on just the flight out of MSY, and then first the rest of the way. Not sure you can sit in the exit row with a bad leg, but some exit rows actually have more legroom than first. Maybe main cabin extra will be tolerable, at least for a short flight to DFW or ORD (or wherever).

Hi everyone! First post here.

This summer I'll be getting about $2600 EQDs and 24,000 EQMs, which (combined with some flights from earlier this year) means I'll be getting gold status for the first time. I've got a few questions about this–
  1. One of my most common trips is US-Chile, and they often have a flight or two on Latam metal. Will my status benefits (e.g. extra legroom seats at check in) extend to these flights? To be clear, I always book them on American, but they're codeshares.
  2. Are there any benefits that are excluded when I book an American flight with miles?
  3. Given the spacing of my trips, I could go for a platinum challenge. The main benefits to me seem to be guaranteed MCE seats and access to lounges on international itineraries. I'm not sure if it's worth it, so to help me decide: (a) how often do golds end up getting MCE seats anyway at check in, and (b) is the chance of getting domestic upgrades appreciably better with platinum (over gold)?
Thanks for the help in advance!

For AA Gold (= OW Ruby) you do not get much.
For flights on other airlines do not expect any more than you are entitled to (hardly any thing)

Does LATAM have MCE type seats? Real premium economy class is not MCE.

Thanks. So I should expect next-to-nothing on the Latam legs of my AA itineraries, it seems? (That might be another incentive to spring for the platinum challenge, since Sapphire gets more benefits.)

But yes, if I remember correctly Latam does have seats with extra legroom (that are not PE).

I got out of MSY!!! But I’m stuck “sleeping” at DFW. Thanks to everyone who looked up flights; it happened so fast that I didn’t have time to update. There was an AA flight out of MSY scheduled for about a 7:30 pm departure that was weather delayed until 10:30 departure. Once she got me on the flight, I only had time to grab my cpap and my luggage and get my brother to bring me to MSY. It was economy, oh well.

We landed in DFW around 12:40am or so, and I was wheelchair assisted to the next gate and here I am with about 30 other overnighters. Chair hogs, too. There are no hotel rooms available in the vicinity.

I am able to catch the next leg of my previously scheduled trip at around 8:15 later this morning.

Thanks again.

International Upgrades

One of my colleagues has top tier status on Air Canada. He told me that very often, he is upgraded on international flights operated by a *A partner (he said it happens on Lufthansa all the time).

Does this ever happen with OW partners? I was under the impression that even EXP doesn't get upgraded on international flights operated by AA, much less a partner.

Does OW status on a partner airline ever result in upgrades?

it can only happen when economy is oversold and they need to move people to biz. Don’t expect to be upgraded just because you are EXP

business-class.com

Hi there,

Has anyone here tried business-class.com? They seem to have good prices, but apparently it's like the original Priceline model where they don't tell you the carrier. I emailed them and they said I could request a particular airline or alliance.

I'm wondering if they actually book into F, J, A, D, I or R. My main interest would be to earn EQMs. If they use some special fares that don't qualify, that's less appealing.

Thanks
