Exec Plat Upgrade on Award Ticket priority
Sorry I am confused. Is an Exec Plat on award ticket just the lowest on upgrade list with other Exec Plats or are they lower than any elite on a revenue ticket?

Status is the first criterion for priority. So you are below EXPs on paid tickets, but above all lower elites including even those using miles+copay or SWU on paid tickets. This is on the airport list. Of course, prior to the airport, if C but not R becomes available, then a lower elite with an instrument could clear before an EXP complimentary upgrade.

On that note - anyone know/have experience if it has to be an AA award? I quite frequently use BA Avios for short distance flights, I always add my AA number so I can pick MCE seats. Should that ticket qualify for an upgrade (AA flight number, BA ticket stock)? Most the time those are awards with three+ pax since usually family trips, so automatic upgrade wouldn't apply - still - sometimes I use awards for just myself.

It is certainly possible for an EXP to be upgraded on a ticket purchased with Avios once the AA EXP number is in the reservation.
I have done this multiple times on relatively short flights that only needed 7500 Avios.
i have no idea if this works for an EXP companion upgrade, as I have only done this traveling solo.
There are other threads about how to get your AA number in the reservation.
Good luck,
