Help choose which flight from OGG, Hawaii

I am trying to decide which flight to pick for my return from from Maui. I have to the choice of flying in first class on these 2 choices:

OGG- PHL -layover is in PHX - the planes are 757 and A321
or
OGG - PHL - layover in LAX - the planes are 32B/321 sharklet and A330

What I am wondering if one planes first class is more comfortable verses another. The price for the flight with the layover in LAX is about $250 cheaper per ticket. The layover times are around the same. What would you guys choose?

OGG-LAX-PHL the 32B is one of the better AA planes and the A330 is not a bad product. 757 is dated and A321 is not as nice as the 32B.

I know you didn't list it, however if you can find a way to get OGG-DFW routing on a 772, that's definitely a winner

Of the two listed, the LAX combo, but I definitely agree with the DFW suggestion above.

We will pick the option to fly through DFW on the way to Maui and I would prefer to fly that route on the way home but AA is only showing flexible fare for that route and its $1100 a ticket more. We wont be going to Maui until Jan 2019 and AA has been showing flexible fare for the DFW route for the past few weeks. I am hoping they will offer the non refundable fare soon but I am not holding my breath for that.

I'd go with with PHL-LAX-HNL. At least you have 5+ hours on a wide body.

I would go via LAX. It gives you the LAX-PHL segment on a widebody, and the 32B is a great ride in first.

We too could not find a reasonable fare direct from OGG to DFW so opted to hop over to HNL, spend the day, and then take the HNL to DFW (also a 772).

Absolutely would choose the cheaper option that is with the A330 for one leg.

Since you're going in January 2019, book the cheapest fare, and try to have to tight connections. Then hope for a schedule change (or even any equipment change), and call and change for the exact flights you want at no charge.

To throw a wrench in things I was wondering what everyone's opinion is of the premium economy seats. We could fly PHL-DFW-OGG and OGG-DFW-PHL in premium economy and it would save about $950 a ticket. Is the 1st class worth the extra money?

Sorry, but “32B” merely indicates an A321-200 with Sharklets wingtip devices. That designation includes the three class A321T, which does not fly to Hawaii, and the two class A321S and -H, which offer the same F seating (~38-40” pitch recliners).

The preference for Hawaii-Conus flights in F would likely be

772
A330
B767
with lie flat all aisle access suites

and anything else (with standard recliner seats in 2x2 configuration).

757 to PHX probably last.

I may be mistaken but normally when AA indicates A321 (on app and website) that is a PMUS 321 (V2) which are not nearly as nice as the newer 32B (V1) and 321T.

32B = A321 with Sharklets, AA.
A321S two class, recliner First
A321H two class, recliner First, ETOPS

321 = no sharklets, from US.
two class, recliner First, albeit LUS

Some F recliner differences, but night and day differences from wide body and A321T lie flat suites.

They’ll (A321 all types) all be retrofitted to the same standard.

No, it is not really if you're comparing with going via LAX as you will basically get more or less the same seat on both overnight flights. The difference between PE and F on B772 is huge of course, but only you can decide if spending US$ 950 more is justified.
