Using AAdvantage Miles for IntraEurope Trips?

Hi,

Is it possible to use my AAdvantage miles for intra Europe flights? I'm AA Gold only.

This thread implies (sorry can't post it as I don't have 5 posts) its only 10K but the award charts say 32.5K miles?

From https://www.aa.com/i18n/aadvantage-p...ward-chart.jsp
Economy 12,500
Business 22,500

I would suggest that there are not that many routes where the pricing would generally make awards a great value once taxes and surcharges are added

Lower on the chart there are 10k economy awards but only for flights wholly within a few certain countries: Finland, Spain (Incl. Balearic Islands), United Kingdom, Germany, and Russia.

Of course, whether you can find American partner flights wholly with Germany now that Air Berlin has evaporated, that I'm not sure.

Wholly within UK would be BA. Wholly within Finland would FinnAir. Wholly within Spain would be Iberia. Wholly within Russia would be S7.

True - but I would be surprised if you could find many cases where a dometic flight in Europe would be worth 10k
The OP did say "intra-europe" rather than "domestic"

Where do you want to travel? Europe is small. Many cites are not far apart, even though are in a different country

Trains go from city centre to city centre.
Allowing for time to the airports/security/check-in & flight time, the travel time for some city pairs on train can be comparable to aircraft and more comfortable.

If flying, a low cost airline will likley be cheaper than an airline that is a ff partner of AA

Mileage awards can be very useful at shorter notice where even LCC prices can get very high, or may not exist, such as from LHR.

Europe is not that small; LHR-HEL takes 2 days to drive or train. LHR-MAD is a very long day's rail or 2 days driving. FRA-MAD similar. ATH-HEL... that could be an interesting land journey.

If you have any British Airways Miles, many intraEurope awards are 7.5k. Great for getting from a hub to somewhere else; not only London but Helsinki or Madrid.

In my experience, I've found the legacy airlines, including partners, to match or come close to the LCC pricing. I remember paying about $150 to fly LCY-AMS on BA; plus LCY is rather convenient from the east side of London.

Back when US was in Star Alliance, I took many flights on LH that were rather reasonably priced. MUC-MAD comes to mind, and they even served a meal in coach. Plus I was able to use my *A benefits for luggage, lounges, and boarding.

And many are just 4.5K (or fewer) BA Avios. If one has earned at least one BA Avios in the preceding twelve months, one also qualifies for "Reward Flight Savers," where the cash component for a one-way to or from LON will not exceed $27 USD for Economy Class award travel.
