AA/US Domestic Dining (including Canada, Mexico, & the Caribbean)

Note: this thread is about meals served on AA-US. There is another thread for the contingent that wishes to debate and discuss linens as a primary subject, including related presentation issues: Linens / presentation debate for meal service on AA, US / both.

Welcome to the 2017 Domestic Dining thread and the resulting discussion/trip reports/photos/shared experiences. Here, in this wiki post, I'll strive to explain what you should expect on AA flights in First and Business, meals-wise. Keep in mind that there are many domestic flights, so there are quite a few parameters to keep track of.

Basically, in its best condensed form, you should expect to receive a meal between 4:59am - 8pm on flights longer than 900 miles, which equals about two hours in the air. From that point, there are exceptions, and specific timing parameters.

What to Expect - Mainline:
Keep in mind that this list is not entirely inclusive, and there may be certain exceptions and/or abnormalities.

  • Up to 699 miles: Light snacks such as a fig bar, cookies, and/or pretzels
  • 700-899 miles: Warmed nuts, a snack plate (fruit/cheese, pita/hummus, or spinach dip/pita), and a cookie
  • 900-1298 miles: A meal (fruit/breakfast entree; salad/entree) followed by a cookie; no meals between 1:30-4pm
  • 1298-2199 miles: A full meal including an appetizer, with cake for lunch desserts and premade ice-cream for dinner desserts
  • 2200 miles and above: Same as 1298-2199 miles, but consists of made-to-order sundaes or a cheese plate for both lunch and dinner desserts

What to Expect - Regional:
Keep in mind that this list is not entirely inclusive, and there may be certain exceptions and/or abnormalities.

  • Up to 175 miles: A light snack mix along with beverage service
  • 176-899 miles: Sweet and savory, organic/healthy snack choices (snack basket)
  • 900-2199 miles: Warm mixed nuts, two meal options, and dessert. (For flights over 2200 miles, you will receive the same selection of snacks from 176-899 miles as a pre-arrival snack. All regional meal flights leaving after 8:00pm will also receive sweet and savory snacks as the only option. Editor's note: A regional jet for 2000+ miles? Hope that never happens!)

All of the meal flights that fall under the above timing parameters will receive two choices; normally, one meat and one vegetarian.

Longer westbound flights leaving from the east coast (transcontinental; non-premium) are not officially exceptions, but some flights after 8pm receive a full dinner service (such as the 8:05pm MIA-SAN flight, or the 8:30pm PHL-LAS flight). Additionally, non-premium transcontinental red-eye flights will receive snack basket service upon departure, then a continental breakfast box prior to arrival.

Official Exceptions:
The following flights all fall under 900 miles, but will receive a full meal service, with the exception of flights leaving between 1:31-4pm. Despite some of the listed flights being over 900 miles, they are remaining listed here, based on the AA website for documentation purposes.

  • Chicago (ORD) - AUS/BDL/BOS/DCA/EWR/JFK/LGA/MSY/RDU
  • Dallas (DFW) - BJX/ORD/MEX/QRO/SLP
  • Fort Lauderdale (FLL) - PAP
  • Los Angeles (LAX) - DEN
  • Miami (MIA) - DCA/IAD/PAP
  • New York (LGA) - ATL
  • Phoenix (PHX) - MZT

Additional Information:
  • JFK-LAX/SFO; MIA-LAX are considered premium transcontinental flights, and as such, receives a more refined service with three meal choices, per-course service, printed menus, and tray/tablecloth linens in both F/J. Those flights now are the only domestic flights in the system to offer special meals as another option (which can be reserved by either preordering online, or calling). Red-eye flights will receive a full "supper/snack" meal service, which is basically a condensed dinner service.

  • Hawaiian meal service is very similar to what you'd expect on 2200+ mile flights, but there also will be Hawaiian rolls served, along with a pre-arrival continental breakfast/snack (dependent on the length of the route). Tropical warmed nuts are also currently served.

  • All flights over 700 miles, regardless of a meal being served or not, will receive warm mixed nuts and a cookie.

SPML Hindu meal PHL-LAX AA727 5:35pm Dinner

FA didn’t know where to put bread. Thought it’d be naan but it was 2 pita slices. Salad was okay, bell pepper looked good but didn’t bother to eat it.

Don’t know what to call those 2 things in the middle but they were good. Chickpea and spinach had a good amount of spice for an Indian meal and rice was cooked to a good amount.

GULAB JAMUN on AA! The mixed berries were swimming in the syrup that the indian dessert is served in, but it made all of them taste better.

I had no idea AA served special meals on PHL-LAX. Thought only JFK-LAX/SFO, Hawaii, and international flights got special meals?

There must be a distance threshold of some kind on them, because my LAX-IAD (and vice versa) meal flights have had special meal options as well.

i believe flights over 2200 miles are guaranteed these options. LAX/PHL is just under 2400.

We also got the ice cream sundae

Nice! I remember post-September 2014, special meals on long-haul domestic flights were discontinued (kept only for JFK flagship transcons). Good to see that they made a comeback.

Eew! Chicken breast with herbes de Provence

SMF-DFW AA 1209 (lunch) last week offered Saffron Orzo Salad with baby squash, haricots verts, piquillo peppers and a side of chilled shrimp.

The orzo salad was devoid of genuine saffron aroma or flavor (it was colored yellow), the pieces of baby zucchini and yellow summer squash were pretty good, the green beans negligible and three chilled shrimp were firm but completely undressed. Not bad, in all - but the shrimp needed some dressing. Or little coats .

The enchilada option was garishly red and didn’t look appetizing.

DFW-SMF AA 1485 last night offered Herbes de Provence Chicken Breast with mushroom risotto and haricots verts.

What was on the plate: a huge, somewhat flattened chicken breast smothered in a gray gravy. The chicken was somewhat mushy, with weeds perhaps but certainly not herbes de Provence. I actually tried a couple of bites before quitting.

The mushroom risotto had a recognizable mushroom bit, but it really resembled something my dog makes when it vomits occasionally.

The half dozen skinny green beans were the best part of the offering.

Perfectly gross. Making American Passengers Gag Again.

And someone ate asparagus, because the lav... well, asparagucic acid.

And I have no idea what calling green or string beans “haricots verts” is supposed to imply: French cuisine? Gourmetise? Someone working for LSG - Sky Chefs is certainly impressed with their semester of French.

Just my two cents, but this part I’m actually fine with... It is the herbs de Provence chicken. It’s not like they paired them with buffalo wings. It certainly reads better than “skinny green beans,” and if you just called them green beans people would probably ask what’s wrong with them that they’re skinny. Not to mention, I’d hate to complain about one of the very few times LSG used a premium ingredient somewhat consistently and used it properly.

I'm in total agreement with you. This is easily the worst dish on the rotation, and it's been on offer FOREVER. Seriously, I must have had this as a choice on 10-15 segments this year. You usually get a 2.5 oz piece of dried chicken barely dusted in herbs and a gummy, mushy mushroom risotto with a few green beans. I avoid this dish like the plague.

Contrast to the huckleberry bbq chicken dish I had last night on the transcon from SFO - absolutely delicious - moist; great sauce; good portion; and some nice quinoa to go with it. Better than some international J entrees I've had this year. And the cold grilled chicken salads can be decent too (with the dressing).

Flying PHL-FLL my choices are:

  • Steel Cut Oatmeal
    brown sugar, various fruit garnishes

  • Montamoré Cheese Omelette
with kale pesto, paprika potatoes and Italian chicken sausage
and for the return:
  • Grilled Chicken
haricots verts, cherry tomatoes, olives, garlic herb butter

  • AVAILABLE BY PRE-ORDER ONLY - Fruit and Cheese Plate
fresh grapes and dried fruit with assorted cheeses

  • Ravioli
stuffed with burrata cheese in tomato garlic sauce with roasted cherry tomatoes
I’m thinking of choosing the omelette and the ravioli as I’ve heard the chicken is pretty tasteless. I don’t fly much on AA so I haven’t had any of these. What would you guys suggest?

I'd go with the ravioli; presentation can be a bit of a mess, but it's a pretty good meal as far as AA catering goes these days. Then again, I might just be biased against the grilled chicken. As others have pointed out, the chicken is rarely very good and it has been on rotation FOREVER.

Omelet on the outbound. I would go for the chicken on the return. I know it is the butt of many complaints here but I have had good luck with it. I find AA's pastas way too heavy and goopy.

I had the exact same options on SJC-DFW two nights ago. Having tried the saffron orzo salad a few months back, and while the ingredients were suprisingly fresh and the dish was on the whole unoffensive, I decided to go with the enchilada option. I was quite surprised. I, too, was alarmed by the red color (we're talking almost a neon red in the dish!), but it actually tasted pretty good. The quality of the dish and presentation, though, was really quite poor. We're talking about Taco Bell to-go here, folks. Even a similar dish at Chevy's would have a better appearance.

Ironically, I had the exact same experience on the outbound a few days prior, this time on ORD-SJC. I took one for the team and tried the stuffed peppers this time, having universally avoided them due to appearance alone. Of course, they came exploded on the dish and nearly unrecognizable, and the pepper itself was so destroyed by the reheating process that you could barely tell that's what it was from appearance. It was so flattened and dehydrated you wouldn't otherwise know that's what it was until you tried a bite, and the neon-orange sauce on that accompanied it was also strange looking. However, when I had a bite, it was, dare I say... tasty. It had a nice kick to it, the poblano cheese had a great flavor, and it tasted substantial.

This may be a little bit of a TMI here, but it was one of those dishes that I ate and was fairly concerned that it would upset my stomach in some way. However, I was surprised, in that I felt fine after eating the peppers (and the enchiladas).

A nice idea for a meat-free dish, but per usual, poorly presented and executed.

Random side note. ORD-SJC flight was only the second flight I've been on in over two years that went out with empty first class seats (two of them, and one of them was next to me). The other was a DFW-PVR flight earlier this year, which went out with four empty. Which, ironically, is an upgrade that as an EXP I've missed twice this year (yes, I go down there a lot :-) ).

@ amolkod I just might order a Hindu meal for an upcoming flight -- galub jaman! I'll keep my expectations in check, but my other choices are a chicken couscous dish that gets terrible reviews on here (both AA's chicken and couscous in general do), the squash lasagna which I hear can be terrible or dry, or yet another fruit and cheese plate (which I've already chosen for the earlier leg).
