advice on using miles or main cabin extra

I will be flying from JFK-LAX-HNL on 1/27. I was able to use miles and get upgraded to business class JFK-LAX but the lax-hnl flt 297 first is full.
if I pay for main cabin extra, but for some reason get upgraded to first do I get refunded for the cost of that extra seat? Should I see if I can get on the next flight #267 and try to get upgraded? Or should I just be happy with what I got? I know its still early but could use some advice!

Happy New Year!

I dunno about the MCE, but if you did a miles + copay upgrade you should make sure you're on the waitlist for LAX-HNL, since a miles + copay upgrade lets you upgrade up to 3 segments. You should also have a higher priority for any seats that become available than status based complimentary upgraders.

Yes I am on a waitlist. But even when I got on the waitlist there were only 4 seats in first in the lax-hnl leg. As of today there are no seats in first for flight 297. Thats why I was considering taking the later flight 267. I think there's 6 open seats. 15k miles just to upgrade from jfk-lax business pls copay seems alot huh?

Well, there's always hope! At least you're not on a standard domestic 738/A321 for the F leg, so you'll get better food and a much better seat for your 15k + copay.

Anyway, what's done is done. It might settle your mind if you called AA and asked if they have miles+copay inventory on 267, because they might not have any on that flight either. How much extra is MCE?
