AAdvantage Aviator Silver and Red Cards from BarclayCard
There are five AAdvantage-linked Aviator-branded cards by Barclaycard. Two of them can be applied for directly, the other three are upgrades or downgrades after receiving a Red card.

The Many Flavors of Barclaycard AAdvantage Aviator

Where can I see information on all available Barclays Barclaycard AAdvantage cards?

Aviator Red (On AA.com)
Aviator Silver (On AA.com)
Aviator Business (On AA.com)
Aviator Red applications are available at the airport, in flight, or online at https://www.barclaycardus.com/.

Red cardholders may receive an offer to upgrade to Aviator Silver after a period of time that varies, usually 3-11 months. The offer appears in the online "Offers" section, if it is declined there may be no simple way to receive the upgrade. Be careful with your clicking! Silver benefits begin at the start of the next statement, but the increased annual fee won't hit until the next card-member year starts.

Aviator Silver Vs Red
Annual Fee: Silver $199 Red $99
Miles on AA Purchases: Silver 3x Red 2x
Miles on hotels and car rentals: Silver 2x, Red 1x

FlyerTalk thread Citi & Barclaycard AAdvantage Credit Card Free Domestic Checked Bag / Baggage

Aviator Silver Bonus Loyalty Points: Bonuses are based on spend during status year, not anniversary year. When upgrading to Silver your Red spending will carry over. Five thousand Loyalty Points after spending $20k/$40k/$50k. You cannot stack multiple Silver accounts to earn this multiple times.

Companion Certificate: $20k in anniversary year spend required, issued about 45 days after you annual fee hits. Red gets one companion, Silver can have two. $99+tax for companions, round-trip 48 contiguous US States only unless you live in Alaska or Hawaii, in which case you may fly from your home state to the 48.

I consider them to be a big benefit.
This is nowhere near the same value as the Companion Fare for Alaska Airlines. The blackout dates, continental US use, the lack of mileage accrual, and no upgrades allowed means that the companion certificate is of limited value. Futhermore, I have to call reservations and mail in the certificate? On Alaska Airlines I apply the code electronically. Is this 1990, AA?

I'm glad I found this thread today because tomorrow is the day Barclay will charge annual fee. ^

Customers can choose to ’round up’ purchases to the next dollar and use the extra spend to buy American AAdvantage miles at 2 cents each. They set a dollar limit per billing cycle, up to $500, where they want to do this. For those who don’t want to participate they just won’t set a monthly limit for the benefit.
This is just an absurdly stupid feature, buying miles is always a bad deal. These companies comoditize their loyalty programs and abandon the original purpose of customer retention, and then they turn around and sell us the points well above market value. I wish they would just stick to flying airplanes.

The list of blackout dates is certainly more expansive than it has been in the past. I disagree about mileage accrual as we've earned miles for all passengers (albeit $99 doesnt get you many miles). I've not tried to upgrade but others report having done so successfully. This is a YMMV case.

I'll only note that I do use them for two companions and the savings has been in the range of $600 to $800.

For those who were getting the 10K anniversary miles on the Red card, that too is going away. Between that and the 10% rebate, I was getting 20K miles for my annual fee.

With that gone, the card becomes worthless to me. The flight cents are overpriced; I won't put $20K on the card to get the companion cert; and I already get the checked bag and early boarding as a LT Gold. So all I'll get from my $99 fee is $25 in wifi credit.

I too am disappointed in the "enhancements" for the silver/red. They have created these benefits for casual fliers, not those with status. The food/beverage credit is fantastic, however, even in Economy I already get food and drink for no cost. I will also be cancelling my card.

I'll be using my F&B credit for companions. Also, it looks like the companion certificate doesn't require $30,000 in spend anymore. I guess it's a good card to keep, but not to use for spending on anything--I think I'll go back to putting airfare on Amex Platinum.

Aviator Silver

The following benefits are being added:
  • Anniversary companion certificate. Get a companion certificate for 2 guests for $99 (plus taxes and fees) after account anniversary
  • WiFi Credit. Up to $50 statement credit on American Airlines in flight WiFi purchases each card member year
  • Up to $25 daily statement credit for in-flight food and beverage purchases on American Airlines operated flights. (This replaces the current benefit of 25% back).
The following benefits are being removed:
  • 10% rebate on miles redeemed up to 10,000 miles per calendar year.
I think he's updated the website as the companion cert also requires $20,000 spend/year vs. the original statement that implied you'd get it on the anniversary (like the BofA Alaska card)

The annual fee for the Red card is $95, for the Silver card it is $195.

Update:

The annual fee of the Red card will increase to $99 and the Silver card's to $199, however, with the Silver card you will receive up to $25 daily statement credit for in-flight food and beverage purchases on American Airlines.

There are changes in benefits for both cards.

Interesting datapoint on the mileage accrual. The wiki on the thread on here indicates that the certificates don't accrue mileage and are ineligible for upgrades. I also was reading that even in the few benefits, there's a $20,000 spend to receive the companion certificates. I can think of nothing I would organically purchase on this card to receive the certificates. With the restrictions, it's likely one needs to use the full benefit with two companions to really get value out of the benefit.

The BOB credit is worth a theoretical maximum of $9,125, per year, right? Can anyone think of a way to get that to apply to AA flights?

Hi, thank you, but I am looking for the additional cardholder fee for the Aviator Silver, not the annual fee.
