Covid-19 Update:
  • Sapphire+ status pax are temporarily allowed to use the Al Mourjan Business Lounge
  • Only tickets issued on QR 157 stock are eligible for the Extending Our Commitment (EOC) rebooking policy

N.B. Upgrades on QR book into fares not granted EQD/EQM by AA. If you're upgraded on QR, be prepared for pushback from some AA agents. You may have to submit a formal request with accompanying documentation reflecting you purchased an eligible fare class.

NOTE:AA has removed most EY and QR award access from aa.com due to a glitch booking these:

From One Mile at a Time (link)

Bottom Line

For the time being you’ll have to call American if you want to ticket AAdvantage awards on Etihad & Qatar that aren’t for travel to & from the US or Canada. It makes sense that American took these awards “offline,” and now it also makes sense why so many passengers have been having issues with checked bags on awards.
If you experience difficulties with the AA reservations system, you may be able to book by calling AA Australia (+61 2-9101-1948 ) then press 4 - or the New Zealand number (+64 09-308-4014) as an alternative - although the call center is actually in Suva, Fiji (South African agency Mindpearl) - as they can often see the inventory more reliably, and you can book.

NOTE: USA Canada travel on QR will earn EQ miles etc. in accordance with the fare class purchased.

Links:

Link to AA.com Qatar miles earning etc.

AA miles earning on QR changed 1 May 2016 (Link):

Minimum miles guarantee applies.

Checking QR award availability:

You can check QR availability on AA's site, BA's site, QF's site, www.awardnexus.com (which pulls from BA and/or QF), or the KVS tool. (A certain number of searches are free to FlyerTalk members at AwardNexus; click the "more signup options" link under the green Purchase button to sign up as a FlyerTalk member.)

When checking QR award availability, you have to check each segment individually. Both BA and QF can generate very misleading information if you try to check QR award availability all the way through [xxx-(DOH)-yyy] in one step. Be aware AA can only book 330 days out, even if you see availability farther out.

Awards on QR may not be visible to AA agents if a multi-segment itinerary is requested; broken into individual segments will generally reveal availability, however.

As well, AA Australia or New Zealand (actually MindPearl in Fiji) can often see and book AA awards on QR US-based ones might not be able to.

From danger: For AA awards, Economy is X, Business is U, First is Z. NOTE: Those with Z (First) awards may see "Z (Business Class)" shown on the QR website; this is a known glitch.

As well, QR sells intra gulf two class service as First and Economy, as AA does domestically. This can cause some issues with a Business flight including a Gulf "First" flight potentially incurring an F award redemption.

From hotelmotel: "Got my QR PNR from AA. Popped over to QR and selected seats." (AAdvantage award.)

Days of the week: To/from the USA, especially in business class, Qatar often only offers awards seats for Mon..Thu departures, not Fri..Sun departures. So makes sure you check different parts of the week, and not just always weekends (if you're not finding anything on weekends).

NOTE: At DOH / Hamad International Airport, lounges as follows:

Qatar Airways Al Safwa First Lounge (not a oneworld lounge): only accessible to those flying First Class on Qatar or oneworld airlines and QRPC Platniums flying in ticketed Business (not oneworld Emeralds flying other lower classes of service)

Qatar Airways Al Mourjan Business Lounge (not a oneworld lounge): only accessible to those flying Business Class on Qatar or oneworld (not oneworld Sapphire flying lower classes of service)

Oryx Lounge: Third party lounge.

Qatar Airways HIA First Class Lounge (oneworld lounge): First Class ticketed customers, Emerald members, as well as their accompanying guests, travelling on Qatar Airways and other oneworld member flights.

Qatar Airways HIA Business Class Lounge (oneworld lounge): First and Business Class ticketed customers, Emerald and Sapphire members, as well as their accompanying guests, travelling on Qatar Airways and other oneworld member flights.

Arrivals Lounges (not oneworld lounges): only accessible to those arriving in First or Business Class on Qatar Airways (not oneworld Sapphire flying other oneworld airlines or other classes of service)

See FT: QR Lounges at HIA

Selecting Qatar Airways Seats
If you want to assign a seat after booking an award, you should first try the Qatar website or app. If you experience issues, please try a partner site like Royal Jordanian, Malaysia Airlines, or Sri-Lankan. You can also reach out to the QR Twitter team to fix your record in order to be able to select seats on their own site.

Wow that increased by $10 USD each for both embarkation tax and overseas sales surcharge. I remember it being $50 each last year. The overseas sales surcharge is only charged if you purchase from outside of Sri Lanka (and unfortunately, AA doesn't issue tickets from Sri Lanka - it's issued from the US).

Flying Qsuites with my +1 and QR was originally able to assign us seats together in the middle but our reservation is currently in two different PNR's since the ticket was originally split by AA. Will this be an issue where they take away our seat assignments?

yes, if there’s an equipment swap. You should have an expertflyer alert set as a precaution.

If it becomes available in business, you would get a text. You could then call to change it.
Or just buy it and accumulate miles, EQM and EQD. I just bought IAD-DOH-MLE for $3500, which struck me as not terrible given that the lowest competing fare was closer to $6000.

As long as you have a QR lap child ticket for the same QR flights for which an accompanying adult has the AA-issued mileage ticket, QR won’t send you back to AA. Or are you not yet at the point of trying to see what AA does with the request for a lap child ticket for the flights and comparing it to what QR does with the request for a lap child ticket for the flights before providing payment to ticket the lap child how and where it makes the most sense? It seemed like AA told you to get QR to do it.

For my travel party members flying with AA-issued mileage tickets on QR-only itineraries, doing the lap child ticket with QR has been the way we’ve gone.

are there typically issues with booking QR awards at the end of schedule? I booked a one way from IAD to CMB about 10 days ago. Now I am trying to book the return which is right at the end of the schedule available on the AA site. I would depart CMB on 23 March connecting to a flight that departs DOH-IAD on the following day. When I search I am shown many QR options including the one I most prefer. But when I select that flight combination and hit continue I get a message say that at least one of those flights is no longer available. But every time I search the option appears. I guess I will try again in a couple of days, but it just seems odd.

One of the flights in the itinerary is outside of the 330 day booking window. It’s in the AA system as an available flight but it won’t be available to book until all legs of the itinerary are within the 330 day window. You should be able to book it late tonight/early tomorrow

I believe that connection is permitted in Europe or Middle East, but not both

Also, if there a fare that would permit that routing

Looks like the website is actually showing phantom availability for QR, at least on the search I am trying to do. I finally called to speak to a real person when I kept getting the same error that my flight was "no longer available" but keeps showing up in the search results. The agent I spoke with said the flight didn't show up in her system but she would transfer me to "web support". But that department just seemed to be some one sitting in front of a computer trying to do the same search as I was, but oddly she didn't see the same search results that I see. (I think she was looking at the wrong date, but I just gave up at that point). I'll let things settle for a few days and try again.

I have had exactly the same experience. It is often not an issue of the 330 day window.

In my experience, two things are possible:

1) It is phantom availability

2) Although you may be in the 330-day window, AA actually shows the seats several days later.

The phantom availability has been showing for quite some time, typically from/to the US. I have had no issues when booking via Europe.

I can assure you the problem existed and exists booking from Europe as well. And it exists booking from DOH and Oceania as well.
