White smoke from plane on tarmac?
Coming into ORD last night and was almost to G concourse when we were momentarily stopped on tarmac. While waiting, this plane which looked like it had just left the gate, was coming towards us when suddenly a ton of white smoke shot out near the tail/engines. It was blown away by the jet blast after about 15 seconds and our plane took a turn so I could no longer see it. When I could see it again everything looked normal although only one engine was running (I believe this is typical for taxi).
I was wondering if something went wrong or if this was normal (although I've never seen it before). I gabbed the registration (N503AE) but was unable to find anything on flightaware or avherald to see if it ever took off.

Not unusual for engine start.

Ah - surprised that is typical and I've never seen it before.
I do miss the picture-in-picture pope smoke cam on CNN.

So black smoke means the passengers are held in conclave until white smoke is emitted?

White smokes leads to red smoke ... no that's not it.
The white smoke is for loading and unloading only. (Reminds me of Airplane!)
OK... generally white smoke= good, dark smoke=bad
