ORD - MAN self-checkin upgrade

We were on the ORD-LHR 9am flight two weeks ago, and, as we checked in, were offered an upgrade to business for $500 (I think). This seemed like a great deal and we took it - however - we have not seen this before. Next Friday we will be flying ORD-MAN in Economy - does anyone know when these deals are offered? Any chance of us seeing this again? Would a very early check in help or should we wait until the last minute? Thank you for your advise.

It's all based on availability and whether or not all requested upgrades have cleared. Last time I got an upgrade from JFK-LHR like that, I checked in at 6:30am for a 11:30pm flight. J was WIDE open that night, so I'm sure that's why it was available. On the return flight, nothing was available, even though I checked in quite early... so I think it just depends on the loads.

OLCI?

Is this only at the kiosk, or will it prompt you if you do OLCI from home?

Just curious if I'm missing out on opportunities by checking in online.

Officially its known as a Load Factor Based Upgrade (LFBU), its been around a while, but should only be offered if there are plenty of premium seats available to cover anyone wanting to upgrade with some sort of instrument (i.e. stickers, miles, VIP). Here is the consolidated thread which discusses it in greater detail:

Can't do OLCI on international flights, so not an option to lose out.

Cheers.
