Would you book this upgrade?

In November, I'm flying GIG - LAX via MIA in coach. Currently, there is no C availability from GIG to MIA (although J is wide open), so I am on the upgrade list. There is, however, C availability from MIA to LAX.

Therefore, I have two choices:

1. Book the upgrade from MIA-LAX now for 15K miles and stay on waitlist for the leg from GIG-MIA (which will be an additional 25K + $250, if it clears). This would be a total of 40K miles + $250 for a one-way upgrade.

2. Not book the MIA-LAX upgrade now and wait to see if the whole trip clears. This means I may end up in C all the way from GIG to LAX for 25K + $250, or I may end up in coach all the way, if the C availability from MIA to LAX disappears.

What should I do?

Personal decision and all depends on what is important to you. Is the domestic upgrade worth the 15K to you on its own? If so, do it. If not, don't. Only you can decide if you should do it.

Cheers.

I'd also look for B fares in the event that they are available to rid myself of the copay and use less points. Though they may only be R/T, it is not clear if this is a R/T or not.

1. Is the MIA-LAX flight the 3-class 777?

2. I would call to ask about booking MIA-LAX now, and then rescinding the MIA-LAX upgrade if GIG-LAX clears, and then booking the upgrade GIG-LAX. Seems to me that this ought to be possible.

I think the problem is that, while one would think this would be possible, it is likely not. Sort of like the VIP upgrade for a domestic/international flight pair. It is possible for the VIP to clear only the domestic and get burned that way. Standard procedure in this case is "oh well".

Cheers.

Also, to rescind an upgrade, the same coach booking code has to be available. I'm currently booked in V. What are the chances that V and C would be available from MIA-LAX at the time the GIG-MIA upgrade clears (if ever).

I think I would, too, although I suspect that sticker upgrades for a Plat on the 3-class are going to be hard to get.

You might also want to check out J awards. Would cost you 65,000 more miles (90,000 plus the 25,000 you would have earned less the 50,000 you would have had to burn on the upgrade), but you would save the $500 plus the cost of the ticket (normally around $800), so you would be getting 2 cents per mile for them. All this is, of course, if award J is available.

Exactly. Hopefully C availability will appear at least 72 hours pre-flight. If it doesn't appear at all you should be one of the first Plats in line for the upgrade at least till the airport list starts. If you don't want to risk losing the stickers (e.g. if it clears <72 hours pre flight) and it is a 777 MIA-LAX then you're already guaranteed a J seat so take a chance.

I definitely wouldn't use 15k miles now.

Operated as three class??? If not, then you're not looking for C. I think you're looking for A(?).

Last week the reservation systems began showing it as a 3 class flight. Still 3 class right now.

,,

is this an allowed option?

1- agree to have 25K deducted from aa advantage acct.
2-provide cc athorization in the case MIA GIG clears
3-take confirmed upgrade on l-o-n-g lax-mia leg
4-have earlier date request for international seg upgrade ( so higher priority among fellow plats).

If allowed, the above would have advantages.

1-25,000 miles as opposed to 40,000 miles if mia-gig clears
2-earlier request date.
3- A possibility, but not an entitlement that a sympathetic AA CSR agent might recredit your acct 10,000 miles in the event MIA-GIG does not clear.

Interesting, I thought the only three class domestic flights operated as such by AA was JFK-LAX/SFO. So, what are the differences between F and J on this flights? Does it have AFS service? Also, the fares are interesting. Do the F fares that cose the same as the J fares exclude the 777, like on UA?

Yes, they've added AA383 and AA1520 (MIA-LAX and LAX-MIA) to the list of 3 class transcons in the exceptions:
IF TRAVEL FROM THE POINT OF ORIGIN COMMENCES BETWEEN 6SEP AND 13DEC06, THEN APPLIES TO ANY FLIGHT EXCEPT AA 1-4/10/ AA 15-16/AA 19-22/30/AA 32-34/AA 39-40/59/AA 117-118/133/ AA 178-179/AA 180-181/185/201/242/245/383/1520
