Airmiles currency - AA started it!
From AARP's Consumer News
The almighty U.S. dollar is getting a run for its money from another currency -- frequent flier miles. The value of the 14 trillion air miles accumulated by travelers worldwide -- many from credit card purchases -- is an estimated $700 billion, according to the British magazine the Economist.
Of course, earning miles is easier than redeeming them, since airlines put more restrictions on these "free" fares. That could explain why, at the current rates of redemption, it would take 25 years to use those already accumulated.
