American Eagle Announces Sale of Executive Airlines

American Eagle Announces Sale of Executive Airlines

American Eagle Airlines today announced that it has signed a letter of intent to proceed with the sale of Executive Airlines. Executive currently operates as American Eagle out of its hubs in Miami and San Juan, providing service to destinations throughout Florida, the Caribbean and the Bahamas. The sale is expected to close near the end of first quarter 2003.

Was AA really that close to the SCOPE cap, or was there another underlying reason. For example, do they just want to add some RJ's on mainline routes?

Yes, AE was hitting its cap. That's why SAABs and ATRs have had seats blocked and why AE sold 14 ERJ-145s to the STL feeder airlines. AE needed to shrink so that they could accept delivery of the remaining CRJ-70s.

See:

Will AE replace mainline jets with RJs? Of course they will. So will every other airline, save WN.

And, of course, B6 (JetBlue).

I applaud this move -- AA really has little or no better options under the current situation (and until / unless some type of agreement is reached with the pilots to relax the ASM cap).

Sure, it might mean some more replacements of mainline service with RJ service... or it could mean restoration of some discontinued mainline service as RJ service. Either way, it helps the bottom line, which if you care about AA, you have to see as a good thing at this juncture.

AA Forever. WN Never. (Nor B6 for that matter)

I see that after the sale the business will operate as an American Connection franchise. Does anyone know if that has any effect on qualifying miles calculations or will the transaction be neutral from the point of view of earning/spending miles on those routes?

completely neutral-- the flights will carry the AX code instead of AA though.

The Eagle pilots (and F/A's) are just pawns in the chess match between AA and the mainline pilots (APA).

Evidently there's been a reprieve, temporarily. According to the APA web site, AA and APA have agreed to a temporary delay of the sale, pending negotiations. AA delays the sale, and in return APA agrees not to look at MIA and SJU's eagle ASM overages.

makes one feel sorry for those poor crew in MIA and SJU who don't know whether to transfer out or what...
