What code does AA use Award tickets?

It depends upon the class of service you want.
Coach is in T class
Business is in U class
First is in Z class
Upgrade to business is in C class
Upgrade to First is in A class.
Coach is in T class
Business is in U class
First is in Z class
Upgrade to business is in C class
Upgrade to First is in A class.

Does the number after the fare class mean the number of available seats? I've never seen this number being higher than 9, i.e. T9 etc.

The reason why you do not see a number higher than 9 is the systems were desinged when memory cost lost of money and the extra diget would have cost more. Some systems max out at 7, some at 9. When you encounter this number, it means there is at least this and maybe more in this class. When you see a number less than this, that is the exact number left.

Just to add a bit to what Tango said: It's not strictly an award, per se, but the North American sticker upgrades are booked into X.
