Why did it take them close to two hours on the ground at Gander to offload the guy and refuel? It was planned to only be a half hour?

I was on a BA flight from BOS to LHR about a year ago and we had to divert to Newfoundland to offload a sick passenger. Issue is that BA (and presumably AA) don't have any facilities at these airports so the refueling and re-routing takes time and is tough to coordinate. Also, it takes a little over an hour for Canadian customs to inspect the plane -- they come aboard, ask for a lot of info (I know because I was on the upper deck of a 747), and do a lot of paperwork.

It took us two hours also.

As this pertains to the pre-merger American Airlines, it is being moved to that forum.

As noted in the Welcome to the New American Airlines Forum! PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING, questions and information pertaining to the existing AA or US operations should go in those forums as it will be quite some time before the two entities operate as a single airline.

Your understanding is appreciated.

In addition to logistical, dispatch and ATC things to work out, taking somebody off a flight is not as simple as RCMP going on board and saying "OK, pal, come with us."

The person boarded in one country enroute for another, with, presumably, a passport from...somewhere. But being admitted to Canada was never part of the deal. The carrier brought the person to Canada and is probably on the hook for getting them back - unless the problem was bad enough to require prosecution. Then comes the question of who prosecutes? There are laws in both US and Canada that could allow prosecution in either country, but it has to be worked out.

Two hours, including refueling, immigration, multi-agency/Multi-country repatriation and prosecution discussions, custody arrangements....yeah, probably about right.

Unruly American Airlines passenger sentenced in Gander
Judge Bruce Short sentenced Olson to pay almost $48,000 US to cover the cost to American Airlines for the flight stopover.

Short also handed down a $10,000 Cdn fine to Olson, along with a year's probation with the condition not to drink alcohol.

Olson said he has to travel internationally for his job with a computer company, and didn't know how he would repay the money if he lost his job.

Short gave Olson five years to pay the fines.

Sounds fair to me. I hope he joins "the other AA" as a frequent member.
