OK fine, I can change my ticket and travel as late as Nov 7th, but what if I have other things that prevent me from travelling thru the end of the year?? Am I simply out of luck?

As in a refund? Not unless your flights already show up as cancelled. You may however be able to ask for a travel credit for use on a future flight.

Unless I misunderstand your question, you can actually travel as late as Dec 20th if there is space in the fare class you originally booked instead of travel up to and including Nov 7.

Rules updated. Date is now November 1, not November 7. You can now make a second change and original inventory is not required.

On the following dates: October 28 - November 1, 2012
And your ticket was issued no later than: October 30, 2012
You may travel: October 26 – November 7, 2012
Original inventory required? No

The ticket reissue charge will be waived for one ticket change. NOTE: Due to the extension of this travel policy, customers who made a previous change are allowed an additional change at no charge.

And your ticket was issued no later than: October 30, 2012
You may travel: November 1 - December 20, 2012
Original inventory required? Yes

Any advice for me please? I'm on Flight 1639 on Nov 1 from JFK to SJU - 1 paid business class ticket, going on a cruise. JFK is now trying to open on the afternoon of Nov 1, my flight is at 7 pm. Setting aside that travel to the airport might be very difficult, what do I do if my flight is canceled? AA said they have nothing available for the next three days even rerouting me through other airports. (And I have trip insurance - but the fine print says - if after a natural disaster the airline flies anywhere within 24 hours of my flight, it doesn't matter where and it doesn't matter if there are no seats available, insurance doesn't pay.) Thanks

Currently, FAA is reporting that JFK will reopen for partial service on the afternoon of Oct 31.

Only thing you can do is look at what might be available on other airlines as a backup plan if your AA flight doesn't go. However, in situations like this, airlines sometimes do not accept tickets written over from other carriers because there is so little capacity all around.

Another possibility might be to see what you can get out of PHL, although you may have to drive there if the trains aren't up yet.

AA New York airports update:
EWR:
No electricity expected until late tomorrow night. No structural damage reported. All flights have been cancelled, with resumption of service expected mid-day on Thursday (01Nov12).
LGA:
Runway 13/31 is still flooded. Airport is not pumping water yet, awaiting further evaluation. Water reaches Terminals ‘C’ and ‘D’. A barge reportedly struck piers on Runway 22, leading out to some FAA equipment. This is being inspected.

AA’s terminal is reported ok with no damage. Some damage reported out at Hangar 4. The Terminal has power, but no outside telephone lines. Computers and sabre are available however.

The airport remains closed. The Port Authority has closed entryways to the airport with checkpoints set up to allow only authorized employees passage.

All operations for Wednesday 31Oct12 have been cancelled. However, late arrival terminators are expected to be allowed in, to support departures on Thursday – PENDING Port Authority Meeting information this afternoon.
JFK:
Runway 4R/22L reported to have a lot of debris (tree limbs etc) blocking it. Water reported to be coming up through storm sewer system, with some water pooling on some taxiways.

No significant structural to the main terminal area, however some roof lifting/damage allowed water to enter. Admiral’s Club area received some water damage as a result. Five jetbridges had some curtain damage, which should be fixed shortly.

JFK is awaiting FAA report on navigation systems/electrical. The Fuel Farm experienced some flooding but is OK and operational. The Air Train system is not operational, with damage reported. Some areas of perimeter fence have been reported damaged/down. Road access to the airport is open but the MTA has limited service into the airport. Officially the airport remains closed.

This is on the AA website:

We will continue to evaluate when we might be able to resume service at our New York area airports. At this time we anticipate starting operations sometime Thursday at New York Kennedy, NY (JFK), New York LaGuardia, NY (LGA) and Newark, NJ (EWR).

Thanks very much for your advice - and your updates on the NYC thread.

JFK

Finally FAA updated the page below.

http://www.fly.faa.gov/flyfaa/plaintext.html

Due to HURRICANE, the La Guardia Airport (LGA) was closed as of Oct 29 at 08:00 PM EDT. The date/time when the airport is expected to reopen is not known.

I had a flight out of JFK scheduled for Oct 28th at 8pm. It was cancelled so I ended up renting a car and spending 8 hours driving to my destination on Sunday afternoon/evening. Up until this morning, I could still see my reservation through aa.com. Now, the reservation is gone. The wait time for AA is horrific (and quite frankly I don't want to tie up their lines since I'm home and others are not).

Is my reservation still in their system? Can I just wait a few days and call back when I'm ready to rebook?

Also, my flight happens to be an Avios reward redemption via BA.com. Should I be calling BA???

The updated East Coast U.S. Travel Policy (now for flights up to Nov 1) allowed me to make changes to my flights to JFK and beyond. They routed me direct to LAX first time. Then I realized after hanging up that I would be short a few hundred points to requalifying for PLAT. Called again to change. Initially, the agent said that I would have to pay a whopping $1300 for the change as my flight wasn't affected by the flood. I mentioned this to her ...

"The ticket reissue charge will be waived for one ticket change. NOTE: Due to the extension of this travel policy, customers who made a previous change are allowed an additional change at no charge."

After a few minutes of waiting, she managed to get my second change through the system without additional payment. Close call.

JFK will have limited capacity as of its opening at 1200L/1600Z. Per NOTAMs, only one runway will reopen (13L/31R), with a contingent flow management, with no ILS on the 13L side, no DME, no taxiway lighting and no RVRs.

Looks like it will take a while to get operations back up, even without factoring in that crews and aircraft are scattered all over.

However, I don't know how to read "75% DOM 40% INT" -- whether they can accept 75% of the usual domestic arrivals and 40% of the international ones, or some other mix.

While JFK is open be aware that the Airtrain is still down if you are thinking of somehow getting to the Howard Beach or Jamaica stations.
