Cancelling portion of Business sAAver Awards
Friends of ours have been ticketed (U) accordingly:
ORD-DFW-MAD(AA)-ATH(IB)-MAD-DFW-ORD(AA)
They won't be able to use the MAD-ATH-MAD portion due to heavy work commitments. They know they will be subjected to the $150 change fee which they are willing to pay but will they be able to get back their business class seats once those are put back in the bucket for re-ticketing?

They actually have 2 awards already ticketed:
(1) ORD -> DFW (AA) -> MAD (AA) -> ATH (IB)
(2) ATH -> MAD (IB) -> DFW (AA) -> ORD(AA)
There are no roundtrip awards using AA miles.
(1) ORD -> DFW (AA) -> MAD (AA) -> ATH (IB)
(2) ATH -> MAD (IB) -> DFW (AA) -> ORD(AA)

Hmmm....she showed me their reservations, and there is only a single record locator and ticket number for the whole itinerary:
ORD->DFW(AA)->MAD(AA)->ATH(IB)->MAD(IB)->DFW(AA)->ORD
ORD->DFW(AA)->MAD(AA)->ATH(IB)->MAD(IB)->DFW(AA)->ORD

A single ticket or PNR can have a max of 4 awards.

the easiest/best would to get aa to fix it up front....another idea would to change the date so they use the 2 flights immediatly back to mad, if thats where they are working...
