AA and JL discounted Awards start at 40k mi N.A. - Asia 6 Apr - 31 May 2012

I just got the following email from Japan Airlines. I just booked an award ticket using my AA miles for my mother-in-law. It costs me 70,000 AA miles. However, with this promotion, JAL member will only need to spend 40,000 miles.(PVG-LAX-SFO round trip). I'm so frustrated. This is almost half of the required miles. It is AA/JL anniversary. Why did AA only offer this promotion to JAL members not AA members? As an Executive Platinum member, I'm so disappointed with AA.

AA/JL Pacific Joint Business 1st Anniversary Discount Mileage Campaign

Celebrate the 1-year anniversary of JAL and American Airlines' launch of joint business by saving 10,000 - 40,000 JMB miles! Redeem AA Awards or oneworld Awards (combination of JAL and AA only) at discounted JMB mileage rates when traveling between April 6 and May 31, 2012. Awards can be requested from 6:00PM (Pacific Time) on April 1, 2012. Award reservations must include transpacific flights operated by JAL or American Airlines. Click here for more details.

No wonder AA is bankrupt!

... adding, isn't it JAL that's offering discounted tickets, not AA?

Note that for redeeming miles on JMB, the award doesn't cover fuel surcharges for their mileage program. So when JMB members redeems JAL miles for awards, they pay JAL miles + fuel surcharges.

Didn't AAdvantage offer discounted award to Japan last year, and JAL didn't?

I don't see reason to complain when a mileage program has a sale.
I suspect JAL customers don't get as many to double, triple, or even quadruple their miles as often as AAdvantage members.

The solution is simple. If you want to get benefits from JAL's program, join JAL's program.

We don't get 100% miles on discounted Y tickets. Let alone all those crazy miles promo like huge sign up bonus for AA credit card.

If ones has to complain, JAL folks should complain about the SFO and YVR sale AA has a while back.

As others have suggested, JL miles are NOT equivalent to AA miles. The latter are insanely easy to accrue in comparison with the former (e.g. used to be able to wrack up 400k per year by simply signing up for credit cards), and YQ on JL issued tickets can be steep. You have no reason to be frustrated.

And just to make you feel better, I don't think too many JAL people would redeem PVG-LAX-SFO on AA. We would rather fly on SHA-HND-SFO on JAL

Is there any promotion code? I did not get this email. And I just checked AA website. The saver mileage from SFO to PVG is still 70000 miles. Thanks.

You really don't want to take this route with JAL. There is a 8-hour layover at HND when you travel from SHA to SFO via HND, unless you want to change the airport from NRT to HND. On the way back from SFO to PVG via HND, you will have to stay at HND overnight since the SFO to HND flight arrives too late and there is no connecting flight available on the same day.

Yep, I can't get any NA to Asia route to show the promo pricing on AA.com. Hopefully their systems will catch up soon.

I just called AA Executive Platinum desk. The agent was not aware of this promotion. So he transferred me to web support. Web support agent said he knows this promotion. So he conferenced me with a booking agent. However, it is too late for AA to have this promotion. I was told that they don't have any saver tickets available from SFO to PVG in the month of May. This promotion is useless for me.
