I predict that AA will initiate 777-300 service to SYD.

Better scheduling and codeshares... but I probably still won't fly it because I can't use my eVIPs!

That story just says the ACCC approved it. What about DOT?

AA isn't going to fly to SYD. There are already 7 airlines (HA, QF, JQ, NZ, DL, VA, UA) on the non-stop US-AU/NZ routes and a dozen more with connections via Asia or South America and AA is quite happy with their codeshares on QF.
Besides, AA has places they should go to before trying to get back into Australia (like ICN, HKG, ...)

Well, the article addresses that possibility as well:
"So the focus for Qantas passengers is unlikely to be more options across the Pacific, with statements from both Qantas and American Airlines that the US half of the partnership isn't planning to send its new planes to Australia..."

Personally, I think the requirements for forming a JV should be tighter. For one, both carriers should be required to fly the trunk routes, otherwise its nothing but a glorified codeshare.
With a JV there would still be only those 7. Only the airline would be called QantAmerican.
I would not have a problem if HKG and ICN came before SYD.

I see HKG before SYD from LAX, especially since QF flies SYD-DFW, which allows for better connections to anywhere in North America (including Canada)
