Rumors: AA will order Airbus (at Paris Air Show)
Hi All,
I hear a rumors from AA will order 500 Airbus to replacement of a MD80s aircraft. Lets wait and see for a real official news releases tomorrow at Paris Air Show.
Your thoughts? Feedback? Maybe AA will ever to order A320NEO or A321NEO.
Regards
Update: There is serious discussion "out there" of whether AA may or not order A320neo family aircraft.

Isn't the grand and very well publicized plan to replace the MD-80s with 738s?

They need something between the 738 and CRJ. But, from what I heard, (the tragedy of AA587 in Queens possibly kicked this off)--AA and Airbus don't exactly have a rosy relationship. That being said, thanks N830MH for the heads up. The fleet needs something new-desperately.

500 isn't just replacement though, that is expansion. If I am not mistaken, there are less than 250 MD80s and over 100 738s in the fleet already, so that represents a 250 unit gain.

I am very confident taking the 'under' on this one.

AA is already replacing MD-80s 2:1 with 738s. Even with new optimistic estimates, A320NEO EIS is late 2015, with the first few hundred delivery slots already promised to existing customers. By then, the MD-80 type at AA should be well on its way to extinction.
That said, if Boeing takes long enough to deliver the 797 then I can imagine AA eventually acquiring the NEO. I think it's far more likely, though, that we'll continue to see 738 orders plus the addition of either the E190 or the CS110 to the fleet.

Whast exactly I hear AE will order ATR-90 or 72. It will be announce for American Eagle.
ATR are announcing a major order from North America so it may well be Eagle.

500?? That's doesn't jive with the cuts AA is aggressively making. No way is that number accurate. Plus, the MD80s are being replaced already...

As for the OP-pretty much no way the rumour is true.
1.AA's got an all-Boeing fleet atm, if they add Airbuses it'll add to an already bloated cost structure.
2.They don't HAVE that many MD-80s to be replaced. They've only got 225 of the things, one-fourth of which they're replacing with 738s.
3.They've publically stated that they've got MD80 leases lasting til 2024 at the latest.
Much more likely given all these factors that they'll order the Boeing NSA (New Small Aircraft, most likely 797, 737NG replacement), due out anywhere from 2019 to 2024 depending on Boeing's developmental plans.

And as for this thread, there is no way in hell that AA, being in the financial shape they are, would order 500 Airbuses.
No way, I think he just drug up another hypothetical thread off of Airliners.net and posts it hear as some big scoop.
Especially not will all the new Boeing's already on the way. Why would they go out and order Airbus?

Please read the thread at Paris Air Show order. Look all the way down and you can see it.

Naw.
Possible, but seems unlikely.
Isn't their focus more on growing their more lucrative international and transcon biz? I mean, what are they going to do with a bunch of shiny new narrow bodies that can fly mostly domestic to cities they are steadily retrenching from.
Yes, they have to do something about the Super 80s, and soon wouldn't be fast enough.
But if anything, I'd guess more 777-300s, or why not go for the big kahuna and get a few 747-800 Intercontinentals?
How else are they going to shoehorn more people through their ever shrinking system.
