What "relative strength in the midwest?" US has basically nothing there; they closed their Dayton hub in about 1990, Kansas City came and went in the mid 1990's, and they have downsized their Pittsburgh operation this year.

But, seriously, I was referring to US's fairly strong presence in many Midwest cities (airports, not hubs). While I know there have been cutbacks recently, up until a couple of years ago, US was the primary way to fly from Midwest cities to the East Coast (Boston/New York/Philly/Washington DC corridor).
