ANC in the winter
Hi, traveling to ANC over Christmas to see family....I am there almost a week, and need to find activities to pass the time....Am I asking too much of Anchorage in the middle of winter? Thanks for any suggestions

Cross country skiing around the area
There are two or three large malls in and around Anchorage
I'm not sure if the Alaska Railroad still offers train service in the wintertime down to the Seward Glacier
I'm pretty sure there is snowmobiling in the area
That should hopefully get you started.

Anchorage in the winter is tons of fun, but keep in mind that the days are short and the weather can be pretty chilly. If you like sporty things, there are fantastic cross country ski trails all over the city, some are lit for evening skiing. You can ice skate at Westchester Lagoon. You can hike up FlatTop or walk the trails at Kincaid Park. Tons of stuff to do to burn of your Christmas feasting. If you're not sporty, you can check out the Alaska Native Museum or wander around the lobby area at the Alaska Native Medical Center to check out the fantastic displays of Native Art (the gift shop is fantastic too). There's a decent art museum downtown if you like museums. Have a great time and dress warmly!

Plus one of the best seafood restaurants in the US http://www.jensrestaurant.com/
The bar at the top of the Cook hotel (Crows Nest or something like that) has a great wine cellar with some surprisingly lavish selections (I guess there is some serious money in ANC).

back in the day
the Pipeline building days that is, the Crow's Nest was the #1 bar in Anchorage. Ask for the binoculars! Well, glad to see it now has a nice restaurant in that location. Do they still have binoculars?
