Tour Boat Strikes Submerged Rock
A tour boat that struck a submerged object in Resurrection Bay during an outing Sunday may have hit a charted rock, according to the owner of the tour company.
"There is a rock charted there, and we believe that's the one he hit," Russ Mager, owner of Anchorage-based Major Marine Tours Inc., said Monday from Seward. The Star of the Northwest was on a routine excursion when it gashed its hull in Eldorado Narrows east of Fox Island, about 13 miles south of Seward, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Mager said.
None of the 161 passengers and five crew members aboard was injured. The vessel soon began taking on water, however, and aircraft and vessels of the U.S. Coast Guard as well as a score of other vessels went to their aid. All passengers and crew members were safely taken back to Seward and the passengers were given full refunds, Mager said.
