Petersubrg: Ferry or Plane

Have to make a trip from San Diego to Petersburg, anytime except the weeks surrounding Christmas. Extremely flexible, but the $611 fare is like, ouch. And it seems the ferry only goes from Bellingham (?) and costs $258 each way? This is not pleasure trip, but my husband needs to visit sick family. What am I doing wrong here?

Alaska Airlines is the only (major) scheduled airline serving PSG. Since there's no competition, there's no incentive for AS to offer low(er) fares.

If you have 20,000 Alaska Airline Mileage Plan miles, you could book an award ticket between SAN-PSG.

Thanks for your response. Have AA miles, which "should" transfer? Hate to use them up, but sometimes you just have to bite the bullet.
