I believe it expires 12/31/03. I don't think Alaska's program runs over into the new year like most other airlines'. My card says "Valid through 12/2003"

Bingo. If you fail to requalify for status, the new (lower) status level kicks in in January.

Related question..

Does AS give MVP status as soon as you fly required miles/segment or do you need to wait till dec 31?

Status changes seem to happen when they close-out the month, which is usually the second weekend of the next month. So, no, you don't have to wait until Dec. 31 (though, as a corollary, if you get your status in Dec., you may have to wait until about Jan 15).

If you fly enough to reach MVP/G by April 15, 2003, you'll have status from about 4/15/03 through December, 2004. No?
