Anyone flying the solar storm redeye?

Buckle up: An unusual amount of solar activity this week could disrupt some of the most important technologies society relies on.

As amazing as it would be to see, Id be a little concerned about flying through a geomagnetic storm. Couldnt the planes electronic systems be compromised?

I've done it in the past. Absolutely amazing to stare out the window and watch. Was very jealous of the view the pilots must have had.

It depends on which system. Geomagnetic storms disrupt satellite based stuff much more than ground-based stuff.

I'd mostly worry about flying through cloudy weather, if that makes it impossible to see the ground, while a geomagnetic storm is disrupting satellite-based communications such as GPS. If the pilots can see the ground, that helps a whole lot if satellite systems are unreliable.

And it depends on where you're flying too. These disruptions tend to be worse toward the poles, and less toward the equator.

I flew AS542 SEA-DFW at 22:52.

Unfortunately I was seated right side of the plane, but I was still able to see glimpses of the lights.

Flew AS372 SEA-DFW Saturday night, left side window, but we were too far south by the time it got dark enough. No navigation issues, stayed on the RNAV point to point routing.
