Nice to see the aircraft is able to function just as expected / designed on one engine.

As an aside, is the "halfway" point determined by time or distance?

I wonder why they would choose to divert to OGG? It's barely like 5 minutes closer.

Look at the map - you'll see a short segment of green line showing their approach into HNL.

First - 5 minutes could mean life and death. There have been air disasters that the planes could not return in time.

Second, just because you call a mayday does not mean you can pay no attention to air traffic control.

if they shut down an engine, the rule is “Land at the nearest suitable airport” irrespective of whether the crew believes they could make the original destination which might be only a few miles farther

I hope everyone is safe.

It's what you get for flying a 737 to Hawaii. Ugh I would hate that.

There are no planes (that I can recall) flying mainland USA to HI with more than 2 engines. In fact, does any US based carrier have anything more than 2 engine aircraft anymore?

It's more about the crapiness of the interior than the amount of engines.

Are you okay with the same "crapiness of the interior" on transcons?

If I had to pick any airline to be on for any kind of adverse event, Alaska would probably be my second choice (after USAF).
