I'm not sure I believe this was a "weather" cancellation, rather a lack of ground equipment to deal with the weather. If it was a traffic flow/ATC, they would have coded it as such. I think maybe its time the DOT looks at what is a "weather" cancellation. I feel bad for anyone who tried to fly PDX/SEA today.

Seems like they could have rented a few buses between SEA and PDX and gotten folks to their destination more efficiently. It doesn't sound like the weather had near the effect on traffic as it did SEA.

Weather Advisory Extended into Saturday:
Code:
Seattle Travel Advisory

Early wintry weather has moved into the Seattle area. An Air Traffic Control ground delay program created average delays of nearly two hours at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Friday. Additionally, the rain-snow mix required more deicing than expected. That one-two punch is creating challenges at the airport as we work through this first winter event of the season.

A new round of light snow could impact flights into and out of Sea-Tac Saturday evening.

As always, we advise you to check your flight status before departure. Sign up for flight notifications and we'll notify you of any last minute delays, cancellations, or gate changes on your flights by email or text message.

I am in YLW serviced by three flights on QX. The last inbound flight of the day overnights in Kelowna for the first flight out in the morning. Yesterday it started out rainy and turned to snow as the arctic air pushed south and mixed with the low pressure system. By this morning we had over 6" of snow on top of a skating rink. This is the earliest snowfall we have had since 2006 It is currently 19°F and expected to drop to 10°F. Evidently, the flight that arrived last night was canceled this morning. That is one aircraft out of the morning schdule and the effects "snowball."

Last year I was flying BCN-JFK-SEA-YLW. Just prior to boarding an AA flight in JFK an electrical storm passed over the airport. When we pushed back we were number 77 in the queue for takeoff. Approaching the 3 hour max wait time on the tarmac we returned to the gate and since the crew was out of time the flight was canceled. I was reaccommodated (and downgraded to 10 across Y in the middle section) on Philippine Airlines JFK-YVR. It was hours late too causing a misconnect in YVR for YVR-YLW. That was reaccommodated to a later YVR-YYJ-YLW. It was a grueling 38 hours from departing BCN. While inconvenient, I did make it home safely. My illustration shows how far reaching a one-hour weather event can be. JFK-YVR was delayed because of the backlog. Passengers waiting at YVR to join the flight were delayed and YVR-MNL was delayed 1/2 way around the world. If weather is even slightly in the "question" then I would prefer they error on the side of caution. What would the tone on the threads be if there was a weather related incident today?

I flew SEA-SFO-PVR on October 14th. The plane was on the ground overnight for the 6:00 am flight. After it was towed to the gate the plane was de-iced before boarding.

Now downgraded from F, in a middle seat, cant check in, and not on upgrade list.

Edit: I've been trying to figure out AS's approach to rebooking, and DO NOT understand the thought processes. It is infuriating.

Really #winning today, AS!

Left a snow storm in Calgary yesterday 6:00 am with no issues. Once in Seattle was onboard my 8:45 am flight to Boise in FC only to be told we had to deplane because de icing could take up to two hours. After about a three hour wait for some reason flight was cancelled. Immediately called MVP Priority line but never was able to get anyone to answer. I found an agent to rebook me on the next available 4:30 pm Q400 flight but was able to get an open seat on the noon 737 flight, row 26 middle seat! Once we boarded we sat on the plane at the gate for two hours waiting for de icing. The 4:30 flight I was originally rebooked on has my luggage which I still don’t have, was so delayed it didn’t get to Boise until after midnight. SeaTac was a zoo yesterday.

Alaska's offer is only 5K in miles or $125 voucher. I also had to call, AGAIN nothing proactive.

This is a disgrace.

My husband misconnected Thursday night due to late inbound aircraft (on AS). He missed his SEA-SAN flight. There was no availability til the Friday 4pm flight to SAN so he got AS to rebook him on the 6am SEA-SNA flight. They boarded and the ramp could not be retracted. A new plane was found and passengers were moved to it. Then the plane had to be deiced due to the snow. He arrived in Santa Ana almost 3 hours late. He had to rent a car to drive to San Diego to pick up his truck. At least he got home. I see that AS canceled 3 of their 6 SEA-SAN flights yesterday.

AS sent him a $75 voucher.

The issue is not about taking the weather seriously and delaying or cancelling due to weather. The issue is using "weather" as the primary reason for the delay or cancellation when it is perhaps not and avoiding liability for compenstion.

Hi -

Wow. Just .... wow.

I had already avoided QX flights for all the obvious reasons. Now it seems like I may have to start avoiding AS mainline through SEA also?

I have two trips scheduled this week, then I will hit 75K. All flights out of PDX and avoiding Seattle. Methinks I will have to book away from AS for the rest of the year's travels.

Sad that it has come to this. I have to think that at some point it will start to really impact AS. The fact that there is still basically no information from the Executive Suite to their customers is completely appalling. Brad (through one of his minions) needs to be putting out a weekly update to everyone, warts and all.

Also, to everyone's point upthread, AS needs to be a lot more customer-centric than they have been. The DL method of "here's a few miles for your account, now go away" might be OK for a one-off issue, but simply does not cut it anymore.

As people find alternatives, they will return to those alternatives and won't come back to AS. A sad lesson they are about to discover.

That's not the issue. A lot of outstations had cancelled flights and stranded pax because AS's ops couldnt handle some sleet. The last of deicing equipment is an operational problem - other airlines, while delayed, were operating.

The ORD manager told me I should be more understanding because I'm a 75K. Excuse me? You just stranded me and now you're telling me I need to go find my own accomodation.

Absolutely terrible.

Yeah that's ridiculous. I would definitely send a complaint about that.

This has nothing to do with problems at AS or QX. The Seattle airport was a mess and all airlines were experiencing disruptions. If you look at Delta, over 90% of flights ex-SEA were delayed yesterday, most were severely delayed. Whenever there is freezing rain, sleet, snow...basically anything that requires large-scale deicing, this airport seems to grind to halt. Furthermore, low visibility and north operations were reducing the number of planes per hour that could land, leading to delays at the point of origin as well. Things are worse now due to the gate shortage, because planes can't push off the gate until deicing occurs and arriving aircraft are left driving around the tarmac waiting for a gate. Most airports that have lots of winter weather have deicing pads, but at SEA deicing happens at the gate which causes this logjam. You would think after a while the Port of Seattle would figure out to better manage winter operations, but they seem unable to so far.
