Not too bad of pricing from ANC:

Code:
Total per passenger
$718.76
Fare
$614.00
Base fare
$614.00
Taxes and fees
$104.76
Cuba Passenger Services Airport Tax
$25.00
US APHIS user fee
$3.96
US Customs user fee
$5.50
US Immigration user fee
$7.00
US int'l arrival tax
$17.80
US int'l departure tax
$17.80
US psgr. facility charge

Unfortunately I'm in KOA already Jan 5, and the fare ex-KOA is significantly higher

Years ago, I remember people used to joke about the AS Eskimo being modeled after Che Guevara. I guess then it is fitting that "Che" will finally touch down on Cuban soil (even though Che wasn't actually Cuban).

Fares are not competitive out of SFO. DL is selling for under $300 RT, while AS wants $700 with forced overnights and lousy connections.

You still can't book this unless you have business down there, right? Like I can't just plan a little four day winter visit down there, can I? (Also, how legit does the business have to be?? :P)

Although not 100% specific to AS, the AA wiki thread on Cuba flights has good info on rules for travel to Cuba (with list of approved "reasons" for entry).

JetBlue pushes back on AS January start

From a column in today's OMAAT:

" ... Alaska was granted the right to fly daily between Los Angeles and Havana, and JetBlue is now petitioning the DOT to take the route away from Alaska, and instead grant JetBlue the right to fly between Boston and Havana.

"Why? Because Alaska has requested to delay the launch date of their flight from November 29 to January 5 so they have more time to market the flight."

It would be best for AS if they lost or voluntarily give up this route IMO.

I don't see any way that a daily LAX-Havana flight is going to be profitable.

As much as I'd like to fly on AS to Cuba, after reading one of the articles about the new AS LAX-HAV service, I'd have to agree with you--it does sound like a major money loser....it's a novelty flight that will eventually go bye-bye like the Russian far east flights years ago.

It remains to be seen. LAX is one of four cities in the U.S. with any measurable Cuban population though, so it's possible they know what they're doing. In addition to being the only nonstop from anywhere west of Houston, this may not do poorly. I wonder whether a 737-900 will work though. I wouldn't be surprised to see this become a 737-800 or even a 737-700 at some point.

It doesn't matter what the reason for the delay is. The rules of the award require that the flight must start within 90 days of it being granted. If the carrier can not meet those rules, other carriers that can operate within the required time period can petition to have the grant moved to them.

DL has strict rules in place for their HND flights for instance. If they don't follow the rules, AA can take over the slot and use it from DFW. AS knew the rules going into it and their lack of experience in the market is showing. AA/B6 and others have been flying charters for a while now so they already know how things work and can quickly get service up and running.
