Sharing a data point. Avios Y award booked SJC-HNL for 2 pax, MVP + no status. At T-72, I asked AS rep to update my reservation with my MP number (from my BA number). At T-24, OLCI showed paid upgrade to F option, but listed me as 'complimentary.' Don't have EF, but seat map indicates coach isn't full.
Net, I paid $100 to upgrade my +1, which I think is a really good deal
(Pardon if it's not in the most appropriate thread.)

7/22/16 SFO-SEA AS 337 MVPG Cleared at 10:03 the night before. Total surprise, woke up to blaring alert email from Concur that a major flight detail had changed.
Aw yeah.

Man.. AS must be selling F fares really well on the SEA-LAS route. I knew it was a tough upgrade at times due to the reasonable F fares and it being Vegas after all... just didn't expect a fully sold out F cabin mid-week in the middle of the summer. Unless people cancel, looks like I'm going to be in the back.

As831 sea to Ogg
Originally supposed to fly out Saturday night (7/23) that upgrade had cleared Thursday. Girlfriend and I decided that with Darby hanging out in Hawaii we could extend the trip a few days. Called in to change on Friday night, and tonight's flight (7/25) was wide open in first. Got the upgrade as I rebooked. Hope someone scored on Saturday's flight!

7/31/2016 SEA-SNA AS510 MVPG Upgrade at ~40 hours
I was a little hesitant to give up 6A for 1C but too late now. Hoping a window opens up at some point today but not likely.
Edit: Success! 1A. But when I add my boarding pass to Apple Wallet, it keeps showing 1C. Not sure why it doesn't update

8/7/2016, JFK-SEA, AS7, MVPG. 2/7 for 0 seats. Weird thing is, I only booked yesterday...I thought MVPG had no advantage over MVP if you booked within the 48 hour MVP window.

8/16/2016 SEA->SFO AS306 MVPG UG @ ~T-32 (4 of 8 upgraded from waitlist, plus 1 more from standby)
8/17/2016 SEA->SFO AS307 MVPG UG @ ~T-56
1st flight was a B fare and the return was a Q, but no U space at the time of booking ~1 week out.
As an aside ... how come I can never consistently get the "you've been upgraded!" emails from AS? In this case, for example, I woke up and checked the AS app to see if I had been upgraded, and I had ... with no assigned seats. So if I hadn't checked myself, I wouldn't have known (and perhaps could've missed out on a preferred seat as well).
Other times, I get the email right away, which is far more helpful.

Upgrade e-mails
Good question. E-mails used to be regular (after they stopped the phone calls about upgrades), but for some while no sign of them. I always check my res within 72 hrs of departure.
Also, I was not always aware you HAVE to check in before your name will show up in the queue.
All these little tweaks - hard to keep track of.
