I hope this isn't the new logo...

(Sure would have been nice to provide a link. Only thing I can find was a 5K run and it has the normal Alaska logo.)
Alaska Twitter account is saying it's not commissioned by them.

They have used an edited version of the old Windows logo - http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_kBh4nxnA8q...ndows_logo.jpg
Clearly someone hasn't done the homework!

Here's an interesting look at some rebranding "failures" and many of them are hundreds of millions into the billion dollar range: http://www.canny-creative.com/2013/1...uch-they-cost/

Everything else is part of the branding. Chester is part of the branding, like Mickey Mouse is a part of Disney's branding ... but Mickey Mouse isn't part of the Disney logo.

That's exactly what it is: an art school project. It's actually listed on the art center's student portfolio section:

An entire redesign campaign for an organization as large as AS would be too large for a single freelance designer to successfully pull off... especially one who graduated 2 years ago and has so little experience: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chulgrafik

Quite frankly, I'm surprised this was even a discussion. It's obviously not the real deal.

As of this afternoon, the event's faux logo was still displayed.

We're in agreement on that one. To me, the plane pictured looks like it has the raked wingtips (the small darker grey trailback from the edge of the wing).
To be fair however, it's fairly pixelated so it could be an artifact of the image, but based on for instance, this digital picture from roughly the same angle of a 200LR, I think that the one in the campaign is a 200LR: http://img125.imageshack.us/img125/7434/61ra.jpg

I actually like this design. Clean geometry, attractive and differentiated color scheme, and a classic diagonal theme evocative of mountains and ascent.

I have never traveled with Alaska Airlines (although I did a Horizon flight once) but I really like their logo and I think it is total madness to want to change it. Remember what Patrick Smith (Cockpit Confidential) said about the generic appearance of modern airline logos and how in many cases you can't even identify the airline from their tail any more?
