I'd be surprised if AS excused 1 segment. If my math is right, asking for forgiveness for 1 segment is equivalent to asking for 667 miles when qualifying for Gold (40,000 required miles / 60 segments required = 667 miles).

That's asking a lot. However I believe the OP should be able to get 2 miles excused, just tell customer service that the pilot circled the airport on one of your trips.
