Segment run: How is segment defined?

Looking at meeting next status requirements and wondering whether SEA-(AS65)-KTN-(AS65)-WRG is considered a single segment vs SEA-(AS1485)-PDX-(AS3496)-SFO counting as two?

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it might have to do with how it's booked....if you're able to book SEA-KTN and KTN-WRG as two separate segments, then I think you're more likely to get separate segment credit.

The milk run in SE Alaska is one segment; your SEA-PDX-SFO example is two segments.

If you spend the night in KTN you can get two segments.

To make things even more confusing, AS does round-trips on the same flight number that count as two segments; e.g. SFO-(AS1352)-BOS-(AS1352)-SFO and SEA-(AS12)-BOS-(AS12)-SEA will count as two segments.

Why is that confusing? You can't buy a BOS-BOS ticket. You need to buy either a RT BOS-SEA or two one way tickets.

Not sure if I should ask this as in a separate thread... I have a follow up question to those who did segment runs in the past.
In case of two same day itineraries like SEA-xxx-SEA and SEA-yyy-SEA (all operated by Alaska, obviously), what happens if the first arrival to Seattle is delayed and causes to miss the boarding to the second departure from Seattle? Do you know would they rebook on the next flight out even in case of two separate itineraries?
