Wow, I think AS may have finally re-opened the floodgates. I have been monitoring U availability for SEA-HNL fairly closely for many months now. And when I checked yesterday, there was still only a smattering of availability, all within the next few weeks and none after the end of this month. Today when I woke up, I saw a bunch of EF alerts I set up months ago finally fire, and sure enough, looking on both EF and the Alaska site, they're now showing tons of U availability for SEA-HNL well into next year (June, at least).
I further confirmed by calling in and modifying an upcoming SEA-HNL flight I had for mid-November. I had booked seats in G using a companion cert for my wife and myself, and we're both just lowly MVP's so we were waitlisted for F and PC. But I called in to up-fare to B, and though the rep indicated she saw the U availability, the system didn't allow her to be able to grab it for us as part of the up-fare transaction. However, within about 30 seconds of her submitting the transaction, we were both auto-upgraded into F. Anyway, not sure about transcon or other routes, but you may want to check... |
As a 75K, this kinda hurts with all the G Tickets I booked using the 30% coupon. Most flights I booked had FC pretty much empty.
|
Seeing it on transcons out of LAX but not SEA/SFO
edit - and more expensive than outright buying in sigh |

MapleLeaf93 thanks for the heads up. I have family regularly flying between ANC & PIT, lots of U space showing now for our relevant dates.

If U space is available on your flights is it worth your time to call and inquire about the cost of an up-fare to use certs?

The up-fare tickets are 4x or more than I purchased them for. So personally, I can't justify paying that much more for a confirmed FC seat. Especially, since I won't be getting the bonus RDM & EQM at the cost. I'll just slum it in Y, or hope that U space eventually peppers out once it's 60%/70% full.
|
Looks like the additional U availability came with further increases to fares in the instant-upgrade buckets. If that means that GGUs get a bit easier to use and that MVPG and above can more reliably get something approximating a first class companion pass, that probably works out OK for me, but will keep watching.

we GGUd OGG-SFO-SEA last week but had to waitlist on the second leg … on reading the latest posts I did a dummy booking and found a pair of U seats; after four minutes on the phone with a helpful PHX agent, we now have 2D/2F on our preferred (later) flight
|
and another score!
AS3 DCA-SEA two weeks out, 2 seats ... $34 to upfare from N (originally purchased w companion fare about two months ago)
|
I must have checked at just the right time.
A colleague is coming up to PDX middle of next week and sent his itinerary, so I checked if he had eligible fares. He does, and there was U space on both flights, so I upgraded him - my first ever use of GGUs. |
Used four GGU to U/G family members to Maui next June. Two initially & the other two about 2 weeks later. Happy folks. :)
