Unable to choose seat for the return if luggage checked in on the outbound?

Unable to choose seat for the return if luggage checked in on the outbound?
I'm getting the following strange message when trying to book a seat for Mrs Clubman and her return leg
"Please bear in mind that you can only purchase a seat reservation if none of the travellers in the booking have already checked luggage. At least one passenger in your booking has already checked luggage, so we kindly request that you contact our colleagues at the departure airport."
Only luggage was check in on the inbound, and what on earth has that got to do with selecting seats in general, and in particularly on the return leg?
