UPDATE DEC 12th 2016
New conditions for retaining matched status with AB:
If you are a member of another Frequent Flyer Program, you can match your status and receive the topbonus status card for 12 months for free.
Within 6 months, you are required to collect either 10.000 status miles or 10 flight segments, in order to maintain your Silver Card until the 12th month.
Within 6 months, you are required to collect either 20.000 status miles or 25 flight segments, in order to maintain your Gold Card until the 12th month.

I was receiving monthly mails till about June and that seems to be about the same time when they enacted the new policy which states those who are requesting a status match must be residents of Germany, Austria or Switzerland. But even though I was matched much before the policy came into place they must have gone back to the old accounts and those who had overseas addresses had their accounts closed.
It wasn't until November when I was booking travel for Europe and trying to link my topbonus account to my reservation it wouldn't work

Thats really strange!
I hope you asked them in what way they think that your trying to obtain an "illegal" status? IMHO they should at least explain and even restore your account, since the policy wan't there at that time.

I found the AB team to very abrubt, I sent in match requests for some family members before the change in policy. It took them months to reply and finally they denied based on the new policy. When I asked to reconsider based on the policy at the time I sent in the orignal request I just got a harsh no, this is final
Its their program, their rules, but they should just stick with it and honor as stated... No loss for me but also havent booked a trip with AB since. YMMV

Mr. F. Bergmann seems to be on a power trip at the moment. I sent in a request earlier this month with a german address and the requested photos (again) of my Alitalia and Amigo Brasil status, sent those and was then asked to send in ACTUAL photos (not screenshots or account statements). Fair enough, sent those and got a response to send a passport copy. Sent that too but then got a response to send in PROOF OF GERMAN address.. I've received my initial Airberlin Top bonus card is that not proof enough?
Finally, got a response yesterday saying:
Dear Mr zainman
please refrain from further adjust status Match Requests.
Otherwise, we will delete your account.
If you send us no original evidence of your residence we can not match you.
Have a good day.

Seems to me that dear old Mr. F. Bergmann has got a serious attitude problem. Come to think of it, the whole of airberlin's customer services seems to be going through a bad patch at the moment.

Anyway, I got my AB status last year October from Gulf Air Gold. It was before the new rule. Used it for all my BA redemption in HKG when taking CX Y class. I was surprised that they did a softlanding from Gold to Silver for me, now I still have 1 year to enjoy the Priority Check in for OW flights. ^

btw, i never received a physical card in my swiss address (well my cousins address) but my status match has actually been processed and actually worked when I flew BA on an award ticket
